About Fort Smith and the Arkansas River Valley

Fort Smith is a vibrant community of around 90,000, with a low cost of living and ample recreational opportunities. Located in the beautiful Arkansas River Valley at the foothills of the Ozark mountains, Fort Smith is nestled between the Ozark-St. Francis and Ouachita National Forests. The region provides hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, hang gliding, whitewater rafting, and camping all within a short drive. In addition, the city supports a variety of cultural attractions, including museums, theaters, an award-winning symphony, and two historic entertainment districts.

LOCATION

This position is fully on-site and requires a regular presence in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Remote or hybrid work is not available for this position.

JOB SUMMARY

The Associate Vice President (AVPR) of ACHE Research is responsible for providing the leadership and management required to design, implement, monitor, promote, expand, and advance institutional research. The AVPR is responsible for identifying, recruiting, developing, and retaining distinguished researchers who are focused on achieving the mission and vision of ACHE.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (A3.19)

  • Promote and support the mission of the Arkansas Colleges of Health Education (ACHE).
  • Function as a liaison with government and private funding agencies to promote ACHE research activities
  • Advocate internally and externally to promote and expand research collaboration
  • Provide strategic leadership that guides ACHE research and the research initiatives of its programs, faculty, and students.
  • Oversee the institutional compliance for research involving human and animal subjects
  • Serves as the designated ACHE Institutional Officer (IO) under FWA 00027206
  • Assure that the IRB and IACUC committees have the resources that they need to fulfill their purpose and responsibilities.
  • Oversee compliance with applicable federal regulations and guidance, state laws, and institutional policies.
  • Serve as the hiring manager for future research faculty
  • Develop and manage the budget required to provide faculty with start-up funds, ongoing financial support, and fully-equipped research space
  • Coordinate with institutional leaders the distribution of indirect costs and cost sharing on funded grants.
  • Serve as liaison between ACHE and local, state, and national officials to identify funding resources
  • Participate in lifelong learning including CME, and CE programs and events
  • Assure that Principal Investigators (PIs) fulfill their responsibilities as stated in their funded research projects.
  • Collaborate with Deans on the develop of annual research goals for ACHE, its programs, and researchers promoting strategic interdisciplinary projects.
  • Participate in institutional and program-level strategic planning
  • Provide guidance and support to faculty and staff on all matters related to institutional research.
  • Serve as a resource for programs, committees, councils, and offices that support research initiatives, compliance, funding, and grant awards, including any required reports.
  • Serve as an advisor to guide architectural design / redesign of research space on the ACHE campus or at the Research Institute ensuring strategic capital planning.
  • Collaborate with Deans, Program Directors, and faculty involved in the development of graduate degrees and coursework related to research.
  • Coordinate with compliance officers/analysts to ensure that research is conducted in accordance with legal and fiscal regulations.
  • Oversee processes related to intellectual property development, technology transfer, and research commercialization, ensuring faculty innovations are appropriately protected, evaluated, and advanced toward potential market or industry partnerships.
  • Assemble and provide reports required for accreditation and related activities.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual research budgets for ACHE and its programs.
  • Assist faculty in identifying and writing external grant applications.
  • Identify and collaborate with educational and health care institutes, and industries to fund future research.
  • Build and strengthen strategic partnerships with healthcare, biotech, pharmaceutical, and related industry organizations to expand research opportunities, secure collaborative funding, and enhance ACHE’s research impact.
  • Recommend, in collaboration with faculty, required research materials and equipment.
  • Lead and participate in faculty development programs and activities related to research.
  • Coordinate and/or lead the operations of pre-and post-award offices at ACHE
  • Other duties as assigned by the Vice President, Chief Innovation Officer & Associate Provost of Medical Health Science or his/her designee.
Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Terminal degree (Ph.D., DMSc, DEL, OTD, DPT, PA, DO or MD) with current Board Certification in appropriate area of specialization, if applicable.
  • Demonstrated leadership, productivity, and administrative experience in a clinical, professional, research or educational setting.
  • Demonstrated record obtaining extramural funds
  • Strong publication record
  • Eligible for coverage by College's malpractice insurer, if applicable.
  • A record of achievement related to leading teams, functioning as a team member, communication, staff management and supervision, analytic problem solving, and education advocacy.
  • Good standing with all regulatory and governmental boards and agencies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years (3) academic experience as a department chair in bio-medical education.
  • Demonstrated leadership and productivity in the areas of clinical or professional service, scholarly activity, medical research, and/or education.
  • Five years (5) research leadership experience at one of the national centers known for research excellence
  • Experience with the National Institute of Health (NIH) study sections

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Demonstrate ability to mentor and motivate students and peers in research and scholarly activity.
  • Has the in-depth knowledge of the funding avenues for research and demonstrated working with highly collaborative scientists and researchers
  • Demonstrate a depth of knowledge in research as well as one or more of the medical, psychological, or social disciplines required for the education of medical students, the practice of medicine and the advancement of medical knowledge.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills, organizational skills, delegation skills, and time management skills with relevant experience in designing and implementing an academic based research program.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in the delivery of health professions education in the classroom, laboratory, simulation and standardized laboratory settings and in clinical settings for students and postgraduates, including medical residents.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in computer skills, i.e. Microsoft Office.
  • Display professionalism for the college in all communication and interaction.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize numerous and varied assignments.

  • May be required to transport oneself to other campus offices, conference rooms, and on occasion, to off-campus sites to attend meetings, conferences, workshops, seminars, etc.
  • May require significant travel or work away from campus.
  • Requires attendance at events representing ACHE both within as well as outside of the college setting.
  • Frequently required to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.

  • Frequently required to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
  • Occasionally required to lift items in a normal office environment.
