The ACC is a not-for-profit organization established in 1906 that has grown to include 33 backcountry huts and 25 volunteer-run sections across the country. We also organize seasonal programs, such as our annual General Mountaineering Camp, as well as Shadow Lake Lodge and our hostel in Canmore. We have a rich history in Canadian Mountaineering and a dynamic team at the office to manage our diverse portfolios.

JOB OVERVIEW

This role requires working in a shift rotation. Working on-site for approximately 2 weeks on with 1 week off, longer shifts are available with the required rest periods between. While on-site you will have free accommodations at the lodge.

This role is responsible for ensuring the safe, clean, and welcoming operation of backcountry huts, outhouses, campgrounds, and trails. The position includes promoting responsible backcountry practices such as Leave No Trace, and verifying hut reservations. Duties involve preventative and general maintenance, including painting, refinishing, repairs, and system checks, while maintaining accurate records of maintenance activities. Acting as a representative of the Alpine Club of Canada (ACC), this position requires professional and approachable interaction with guests and park visitors, while consistently following WHMIS and OH&S standards.

IDEAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

· Strong understanding of backcountry etiquette

· Ability to provide clear, friendly guest orientation and customer service.

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills to liaise professionally with park visitors and guests.

· Ability to work independently and in remote backcountry environments.

· Physically fit and able to perform manual tasks, including lifting and outdoor work.

· Familiarity with WHMIS and Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) procedures.

· First Aid and CPR certification an asset

· Valid driver’s license and comfort traveling to remote facilities.

· Valid Pro-serve for alcohol sales an asset

RESPONSIBILITIES

· Support in General Store as cashier, including POS sales, regular inventory counts, and restocking.

· Provide guest orientation and promote responsible backcountry etiquette, including Leave No Trace principles.

· Verify hut guest reservations.

· Represent the ACC and liaise with park visitors in a professional and approachable manner.

· Provide excellent customer service by addressing guest inquiries, resolving issues, and ensuring guest satisfaction throughout their stay.

· Perform and oversee daily cleaning activities for cabins, main lodges and washrooms, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, and waste disposal to maintain a clean and welcoming environment.

· Inspect and troubleshoot hut infrastructure and systems and maintain records of maintenance activities and system checks. Regularly monitor and manage water and propane levels to ensure consistent lodge operations.

· General Maintenance: Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of lodge facilities, addressing any repairs or issues as they arise to ensure safety and functionality. Duties include chopping wood, changing over poo barrels, sweeping solar panels, shovelling, and general trail maintenance.

· Inventory Management: Keep track of lodge supplies and alcohol stock; Communicate with ACC operations team to re-order as necessary to maintain adequate stock.

· Safety Procedures: Ensure all operations comply with health and safety regulations, implementing procedures to safeguard both guests and ACC staff. Adhere to WHIMIS and Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) procedures at all times.
