About This Position
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of Preceptor, the Senior Nurse Intern (SNI) acquires practical knowledge and designated skills in order to prepare for transition from student to graduate nurse. The SNI assists in the care and support of the patient, utilizing specific technical skills, including nursing skills, which have been learned in a nursing education program, and for which competency has been previously demonstrated under the supervision of a faculty member. The SNI may be required to float to other units, may be required to participate in on-call status, and will be required to complete online competencies as assigned. Other job duties may be assigned which are within the scope of the Senior Nurse Intern abilities as necessary. Patients cared for may be infants, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. The SNI is a temporary interim position during the RN student’s senior year or PN student’s final rotations. The SNI may administer medications and perform assessments under the direct supervision of the RN Practice Partner Preceptor or LPN Preceptor if the SNI is a PN student. The SNI may not act in a supervisory role, take verbal orders from the physician or other healthcare providers, or develop the plan of care.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum age of 18 years.

Must be in their final year of nursing school at an accredited nursing program for RN students or in their final rotation for PN students.

Ability to function in stressful situations.
-
Must be able to count, add, subtract, multiply and divide, to record information such as patient’s intake and output.
-
Must be able to remember all activities related to the care of the patient.
-
Must have reading skills in the English language to comprehend all materials regarding all aspects of patient care within the limits of the essential performance standards identified in the appropriate job description.

Must be able to assimilate complex data concerning patient diagnoses and in all unit procedures and utilize inductive and deductive reasoning in the care of the patient.

Current CPR card or completion within 30 days of employment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
-
Must have strength and stamina for prolonged walking and standing.
-
Demonstrates adequate vision, or correctable with glasses, to read and write.
-
Able to hear, or correctable with hearing devices, and able to talk to converse with others in person and over the phone, and to hear various ringing alarms while performing other job duties.
-
Possess fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination to give care (i.e.: finger stick blood sugars, vital signs, feed patients, and handle instruments).
-
Able to work in latex burdened environment.
-
Able to frequently lift at least 60 lbs., reach, pull, push, bend, stoop, and kneel.
-
Lifting of monitors, oxygen tanks, backboards, boxes of supplies, and other equipment on a daily basis.
-
Requires transfers and transports of patients and/or various equipment including but not limited to beds, wheelchairs, patients, audio/visual equipment, carriers, carts and monitoring equipment; Must obtain assistance when weight exceeds individual ability.

Required to stand, walk, reach, or stoop more than 75% of the working day.
-
Required to work in a cramped position while assisting with medical procedures such as casting, splinting, suturing, lumbar punctures, and other required procedures.

May be required to run or climb during emergency situations.
-
Must possess sufficient dexterity to perform technical skills such as inserting a foley or phlebotomy.
-
Must be able to operate and handle medical equipment and technologically of complex devices.
-
Must be able to write (in English) neatly and legibly on a daily basis.
-
Must possess sense of touch and have an ability to determine different degrees of temperature and textures.
-
Ability to hear and understand through protective garments.
-
Must have accurate color perception to evaluate skin color, circulation, abrasions, and body fluid color.
