Maintenance Worker, Water Utility in MONTCLAIR, New Jersey at TOWNSHIP OF MONTCLAIR

Summary: This position involves the operation, maintenance, installation, repair and inspection of the Township's water facilities and/or sanitary sewer facilities, including water meters, mains, sanitary sewer lines, valves, hydrants, curb boxes, manholes and pumping stations. Performs related duties as required consistent with municipal water and sewer activities. Work is performed under general direction from a Utilities Department Supervisor or their designee who assigns duties and reviews performance for completeness and conformance to instructions and regulations. Duties: Installs, maintains, replaces and repairs water meters, mains, valves, hydrants, curb boxes, and other appurtenances of the water supply system. Cleans sanitary sewers; cleans and disinfects areas affected by sanitary sewage back-ups, which would include homeowners' residences. Maintains cleanliness at the sanitary sewer pump station. Performs masonry work, excavating and backfilling of trenches, digging holes, and entering confined spaces upon completing a training program. Performs miscellaneous manual repair and maintenance duties at the pumping stations and facilities; works during the hydrant flushing program, at the work time assigned. Operates sanitary sewer cleaning machines and assists in the laying of new sanitary sewer pipes; assists in the installation and refurbishment of sanitary sewer manholes. Performs general maintenance duties such as painting of pumping equipment, station pipes, hydrants, and the exterior/interior of Water Bureau structures; mows lawns and performs other grounds keeping duties and custodial duties. Stores pipes, fittings and other Water Bureau construction and repair materials. Operates various construction and repair tools, including drills, jack hammers, paving breakers, tampers, electric saws and other power equipment as required. Assists water mechanics in repairs and servicing Water Bureau facilities, equipment and distribution system and may assist in snow, ice, and storm clearance duties. Collects, loads, and unloads, with and without assistance, various types of equipment. Utilizes safety equipment and follows safety procedures to ensure protection of personnel, equipment, and the general public during maintenance operations; participates in emergency stand-by.Requirements: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a high school. Masonry, water and sewer construction experience preferred. Must be physically able to dig trenches; must pass confined space and safety training; must be able to lift heavy loads of at least seventy-five pounds and must be able to work in various kinds of weather. Must have a valid New Jersey Driver's License. Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with Air Brake Endorsement is preferred (or must be acquired within ninety [90] day probationary period). Position requires off hours availability to work nights and weekends as situations warrant.Rate: $19.66 per hour; full-time/40 hours per week; includes health benefits, paid time off and state pension enrollment.
