Swimming Pool Lifeguard at TOWNSHIP OF MORRIS – CONVENT STATION, New Jersey

LIFEGUARD

Reports to: Pool Manager, Assistant Pool Manager, Head Lifeguard

Supervises: Patrons using pools

Job Summary: Create a safe environment for the public. Enforces rules and regulations set by the pools. Participate in training regularly. Clean-up and maintain cleanliness before and after shift.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities

• Prevents accidents and minimizes or eliminates hazardous situations

• Responds quickly to all emergency situations in the water and performs water rescues

• Administers Artificial Respiration, CPR, use of Automatic External Defibrillator and otherwise renders First Aid

• Participates in pre-season and regular in-service training and fitness programs for staff

• Sees that rules and regulations of the maintenance of safety and good order are carried out

• Observes and enforces all posted rules and regulations pertaining to patrons and staff, and provides direction for good safety practices

• Educates patrons and informs them of the purpose of and need for compliance with rules and regulations

• Implements safety related elements of the Pool Operation Manual, consults with Pool Manager and Assistant Pool Manager in planning and implementation of the Pool

Emergency Action Plan

• Participates safety for the Learn to Swim program

• Maintenance of life saving equipment and supplies pertaining to water safety or instruction

• Alerts Pool Operator and maintenance staff to maintenance and safety work required

• Responsible for maintaining positive public relations with the users of the facility

• Provides all required records and reports

• May aid individuals with disabilities in accessing pools

• Performs various pool maintenance functions which include periodic chemical checks, the handling and dispersing of pool chemicals, standing, bending, climbing lifting at least 50 pounds, and the ability to read gauges and test kits involving color distinction

Education, Knowledge, Training, Skills and Abilities:

• Must possess an American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid, AED and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate at the time of appointment, and maintenance of said certifications for the duration of employment.

• American Red Cross certification in American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor; preferred

• Must have thorough knowledge of water rescue methods and first-aid techniques

• Must have thorough knowledge of swimming hazards and safety precautions

• Must have the ability to supervise and coordinate patrons during rescue operations

• Must have swimming skills, communications skills, organization, and scheduling skills

• Must enjoy working with the public and a diverse local community
