Communications College Intern at City of Bonney Lake – Bonney Lake, Washington

This position is open until filled with a first review of May 29, 2025. Hours: 16 to 20 hours per week This is a part-time, seasonal position, with some weekend/evening work required.

Position Overview:
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic college student to join our Executive Department as an intern. This internship is unpaid but offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public relations, social media management, and community engagement within a municipal setting.

Essential Functions:
All duties performed will be under the supervision and guidance of the Assistant to the City Administrator. Duties may include but are not limited to:

• Assist with the City’s social media outreach:

• Create fun and engaging social media campaigns to educate the public on programs, events, and projects happening in Bonney Lake.
• Research what other cities are doing well on social media and provide suggestions on new ways Bonney Lake can engage with the community.

• Assist in creating and scheduling social media content across various platforms.
• Assist with website updates.
• Take photos and videos for use in various city communications.
• Support the development and distribution of newsletters, press releases, and other communication materials.
• Participate in community outreach events and help with event planning and coordination.
• Perform administrative tasks as needed, such as data entry and filing.
• Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

• Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program with a major in Communication(s) or similar field.
• 18 years of age by the start date of June 1, 2025.
• Ability to work some evenings and weekends during special events.
• Driver’s license.

• Successful passing of a required background check.

Preferred:

• Excellent written and oral communication skills with attention to detail, especially in creating public-facing correspondence.
• Experience and interest in social media and graphic design.
• Able to manage multiple tasks, with attention to detail.
• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and design software programs

Physical Demands

• Moving throughout City facilities and buildings.
• Travel to off-site locations and move throughout the community as needed.
• Drive and perform field work.
• Operate a computer and other office equipment.
• Communicate with City employees and residents.
• Bend, lift, and hold objects on occasion.

Work Environment

• Work will be performed in both the office and outside in the field with exposure to all weather conditions.
• Tasks will include standing, sitting, or walking for long periods of time and navigating uneven and/or steep terrain.
• Exposure to high voltage wires, hazardous materials, heights, and noise from equipment.
• Noise level out in the field is moderately loud.
• Noise level in the office is moderately quiet.
• Work evening and/or weekend hours as needed.
• Night meetings may be required.
