About This Position

Serve your community, gain valuable skills, and get paid while training—become a Paid On-Call Firefighter with the Ramsey Fire Department.

Paid On-Call Firefighters protect lives and property by responding to fires, medical emergencies, rescues, hazardous materials incidents, and more. They train regularly, maintain equipment, and engage with the community to support the Ramsey Fire Department’s mission.

No prior experience is required—paid training is provided, including attendance at the Anoka County Fire Academy. Positions are available at Station #1 (15050 Armstrong Boulevard) and Station #2 (5650 Alpine Drive NW). Applicants must meet station response time requirements.

Starting wage is $14.47/hour during the first year of probation/training, with top pay of $18.22/hour.

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid Minnesota driver’s license in good standing.
  • Must provide proof of valid automobile insurance upon request.
  • Must reside and/or be employed within an eight (8) minute response distance of either fire station.
  • Must successfully complete the department’s 8-Station Physical Agility Test.
  • Must pass a pre-employment assessment, physical examination, and drug screening.

Note: No prior experience is required. All required formal training is provided and paid for by the City of Ramsey.

Physical Agility Test Components (6.5 minutes maximum)
  • Drag 5” Supply Hose to a hydrant
  • Fire hydrant connection operations
  • Ladder lifting, carrying, and climbing
  • Crawling under a 12-foot low structure
  • Carrying a 5-gallon, ~55 lb. bucket of foam
  • Controlled raising/lowering of a 2-fly extension ladder
  • Stair carry with modified high-rise hose bundle
  • Connect high-rise hose to standpipe
  • Striking a wooden simulator with a 10 lb. sledgehammer
  • Dragging a 185 lb. mannequin for 50 feet

The Agility Test date will be Saturday, October 11, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. at Station #1.
  • Respond to emergency calls within assigned station area while meeting minimum participation requirements.
  • Perform fire suppression tasks in line with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, including operating fire apparatus, pumps, hoses, and performing search, rescue, ventilation, and overhaul activities.
  • Support emergency medical response, technical rescue, and hazardous materials operations.
  • Attend weekly drills, department meetings, and required training sessions, maintaining active participation and competency standards.
  • Assist with routine maintenance of station facilities, vehicles, and equipment (e.g., cleaning, inspections, hose care, and apparatus upkeep).
  • Participate in community education and outreach on fire prevention, safety, and emergency preparedness.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned by the Fire Chief or designee.

  • Understanding of fire department operations and services.
  • Ability to learn and apply fire suppression, rescue, and emergency service techniques and procedures.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, pumps, ladders, boats, and fire apparatus.
  • Competence in operating a range of department vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend manuals, textbooks, and safety procedures.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills under pressure.
  • Ability to meet physical and medical requirements per NFPA 1582 and OSHA respiratory standards.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Team-oriented, able to follow instructions, and perform calmly under emergency conditions.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills in high-stress situations.
  • Professional demeanor and strong interpersonal skills when interacting with the public, team members, and partner agencies.
