Department Purpose

The Southwest Region campuses provide high quality educational programs and services to the citizens of Archuleta, Dolores, La Plata, Montezuma, and San Juan counties. Campus sites are in Mancos and Durango.

Summary

The Assistant Director of Student Services supports academic advising, financial aid advising, support services to internal and external constituents within the Southwest Campus region, directs career and transfer services, and directs student leadership.

In accordance with Colorado Revised Statutes 24-50-135, this position has been exempted from the State Personnel System.

Essential Functions

  • Manages student support services to include:
    1. Assessing the needs of students
    2. Providing advising, registration, and enrollment services.
  • Advises special populations that require advanced advising expertise.
  • Collaborates with faculty to resolve student issues relating to academic performance.
  • Collaborates with Admissions & Records to assist students with Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE), New Mexico Reciprocity, and American Indian Tribes with Historical Ties to Colorado.
  • Recommends and implements approved support initiatives.
  • Works with concurrent enrollment coordinator during busy time to ensure proper registration in classes.
  • Maintain student files, records and data in accordance with federal, state, system and college operating procedures and protocols, stays current on applicable laws, policies and procedures (e.g FERPA) and assists in unit’s financial aid, recruiting, career service, and retention programs and activities.
  • Oversees all functions of the Associated Student Government (ASG).
    1. Develops programming to support student governance and student engagement.
    2. Approve requests for new student organizations or groups.
    3. Oversees and manages the ASG budget.
  • Assists with guiding students through Tribal Scholarships, both Nation and chapter scholarships.
  • Assists Veteran students with application processes and serve as a liaison.
  • Manages career development events, coordinating campus visits, and working with the Colorado Workforce Development Center to meet industry needs in job placement.
  • Develops relationships with community agencies, local employers, faculty and staff.
  • Markets information on campus recruiting and posting job announcements.
  • Provides leadership in developing and coordinating annual and long-range goals and objectives for the office of student services, consistent with the mission of the college.

  • Assesses individual and department work processes and recommends improvements.
  • Complies with System and College protocols and departmental procedures.
  • Obtains and maintains proficiency with required systems and equipment.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student and employee information as required.
  • Completes all required compliance training within the established timeline.
  • Serves on committees and other groups as assigned.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.


Experience

  • Two years of experience working in student services
  • One-year experience related to essential functions
  • Three years of experience working in higher education


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of current laws and best practices related to FERPA, ADA, Title IX, and other application regulations.
  • Knowledge of best practices in advising, career paths, student leadership and code of conduct.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; working knowledge of student information systems (Navigate, Banner, Recruit) a plus.
  • Able to lift 15 pounds
  • Able to read and communicate in English
  • Mobility around campus


Travel – in the Southwest region, to the main campus in Pueblo, to conferences in or out of state.


Schedule – Infrequent evening and weekend work.
