Job Description
The City of Sandy Springs is seeking a knowledgeable, customer-focused professional to serve as a Permit Coordination Specialist (PCS) within our Community Development Department. This highly visible role is critical to the City's development process and serves as both the first and final point of contact for many customers navigating permitting, plan review, and project completion.
As a Permit Coordination Specialist, you will act as a trusted guide throughout the permitting lifecycle—helping applicants understand requirements, coordinating plan reviews, facilitating communication among stakeholders, and ensuring projects move efficiently from submission to approval. This position is ideal for individuals with experience in permitting, construction, drafting, architecture, engineering, or development services who enjoy solving problems, working with technical documents, and delivering exceptional customer service.
What You'll DoCustomer Service & Permit Coordination- Serve as the primary point of contact for permit applicants, contractors, design professionals, developers, and property owners.
- Guide customers through the permitting process from initial application through project completion.
- Provide in-person assistance during regular business hours and support customers via phone and email.
- Answer permit-related inquiries and help resolve application issues efficiently and professionally.
- Review permit submissions for completeness and readiness for review.
- Route and assign construction plans and site development documents through permitting software systems including EnerGov/Build Sandy Springs and Bluebeam Studio.
- Coordinate reviews across multiple City departments and divisions.
- Monitor permit workflows and help ensure applications move through review stages in a timely manner.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, building plans, plats, site plans, and related technical documents.
- Verify permit package requirements and identify missing or incomplete information.
- Facilitate communication between applicants and technical reviewers.
- Process approved plans and prepare permits for issuance.
- Issue Certificates of Occupancy (CO), Temporary Certificates of Occupancy (TCO), Certificates of Completion (CC), and related documentation.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure documentation is properly organized and retained.
- Associate degree required.
- In lieu of a degree, candidates with five (5) to seven (7) years of experience in permitting, drafting, construction, or a closely related field may be considered.
- Experience in at least one of the following roles:
- Permit Technician
- Permit Review Coordinator
- Architectural Specifier
- Contractor
- Drafter
- Plan Reviewer
- Construction Administrator
- Demonstrated ability to read, identify, and interpret construction documents.
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Communications, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a closely related field.
- ICC Permit Technician Certification.
- ICC Building Plans Examiner Certification.
- Experience in architectural design and drafting.
- Experience in engineering design and drafting.

- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
