The Respiratory Educator is responsible for the coordination, development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs within the Respiratory Care Department. This role supports onboarding for new employees, competency validation, continuing education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and evidence-based practice initiatives for respiratory care staff and associated healthcare disciplines. The Educator serves as a clinical resource and mentor while promoting professional growth, regulatory compliance, patient safety, and standardization of respiratory care practices.
Major Responsibilities:
1. Coordinate and facilitate all new hire orientations for Respiratory Care staff.
2. Develop and maintain onboarding pathways, orientation checklists, and competency assessments for new employees. Will work with leadership and preceptors to ensure successful onboarding and transition to staff therapist.
3. Evaluate orientation progress and provide feedback to staff and the leadership team.
4. Coordinate respiratory-related education across multiple disciplines. Develop and deliver educational programs, lectures, simulation training, competency validation, and bedside instruction.
5. Organize and facilitate in-services, lectures, skill days, continuing education events, new equipment roll out, vendor- supported educational opportunities.
6. Assist with departmental quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and operational initiatives where education is required.
7. Support implementation of new equipment, policies, procedures, and clinical protocols.
8. Assist at bedside for clinical support for troubleshooting, mentorship, and advanced respiratory care guidance.
9. Maintain and track annual staff competencies, including staff passports, certifications, and mandatory education requirements.
10. Develop educational materials including presentations, learning modules, competency tools, and reference guides.
11. Monitor current respiratory care standards, literature, and best practices to ensure educational content remains current and evidence based.
12. Coordinates mock codes and simulation activities
13 Assist in preparation for regulatory surveys and accreditation requirements related to respiratory education and competency.
14. Collaborate with the ECMO manager and ECMO leads to support ECMO education and competency.
15. Work with the ECMO manager for ECMO orientation, ongoing competency assessment, simulation training, and continuing education activities as needed.
16. Ensures staff licensure, as well as credential (NBRC) and competency compliance.
17. Ensures that department complies with hospital-established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.
Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:
1. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
2. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
5. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients, and visitors.
6. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed

II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1.Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
2. Bachelor’s degree or currently working towards bachelor’s degree in respiratory care or other health care related curriculum within 2 years.
3. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)- Current registration by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) – Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential effective January 2017 for new hires. All employees are expected to comply with the NBRC’s Continuing Competency program and are required to provide evidence that they are continuing to meet current standards of practice and have successfully renewed their national credentials issued by the NBRC.
4. Current Massachusetts Respiratory Care license.
5.Current BLS and ACLS certification.
Preferred:
1. PALS certification.
2. NRP certification.
Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Minimum five years of adult critical care respiratory experience.
2. Thorough knowledge of the specialized field of respiratory care. Must be competent in Pediatric Respiratory care.
3. Demonstrated competency in interpersonal relationship skills, leadership ability, commitment to the organization and flexibility.
4. Experienced in building positive working relationships and facilitating high functioning teams.
5. Strong leadership capabilities through communication and education.
Preferred:
1. Previous ECMO experience.
2. Previous Educator experience.
III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:
Work is considered medium work. Position requires work indoors in all clinical areas and a normal office environment.
Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Includes lifting occasionally, standing and walking frequently.
