This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Mortgage Underwriter based in the United States.
This role is a key part of a high-volume mortgage origination fulfillment environment, where you will evaluate complex loan files to ensure they meet investor, agency, and regulatory requirements for secondary market eligibility. The Senior Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for making critical credit decisions across a variety of loan products, balancing risk, compliance, and production efficiency. You will work across multiple channels including retail, wholesale, jumbo, HELOC, correspondent, and construction lending. The role requires strong analytical judgment and the ability to interpret evolving underwriting guidelines with precision. You will collaborate closely with internal teams and external partners to resolve conditions and ensure smooth loan execution. This position is ideal for an experienced underwriter who thrives in a fast-paced, detail-oriented, and compliance-driven environment. Your decisions directly impact loan quality, salability, and overall portfolio performance.
- Perform full-cycle underwriting of mortgage loans across multiple product types, including retail, wholesale, jumbo, HELOC, correspondent, and construction lending, under delegated and non-delegated authority.
- Review and analyze loan files to ensure compliance with agency, investor, and internal credit policies.
- Evaluate credit risk, borrower eligibility, and collateral quality, including detailed appraisal review.
- Identify documentation gaps, underwriting conditions, and risk factors, communicating findings clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure loans meet secondary market salability standards while balancing production timelines and quality expectations.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and investor lending regulations and underwriting guidelines.
- Collaborate with loan originators, client relationship managers, and internal teams to resolve underwriting issues and support loan progression.
- Provide clear, well-documented underwriting decisions aligned with compliance and credit standards.
- Recent mortgage underwriting experience (within the past 6 months), ideally across retail, wholesale, or jumbo loan products.
- Strong experience with HELOC and/or construction lending underwriting, including guideline interpretation and collateral risk assessment.
- Deep knowledge of AUS systems such as DU, LP, FHA Connection, and Total Scorecard.
- Proven ability to underwrite in a high-volume origination or fulfillment environment while maintaining accuracy and compliance.
- Strong understanding of agency, investor, and secondary market underwriting requirements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly explain credit decisions.
- Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and a disciplined, compliance-first mindset.
- Ability to manage multiple loan files and priorities in a fast-paced production environment.
