Job Description
The Maryland Food Bank (MFB) is a nonprofit, anti-hunger organization whose mission is to feed people, strengthen communities, and end hunger for more Marylanders. MFB does this work by expanding access to nutritious food while also seeking to eliminate the root causes of hunger.
MFB’s distributes food through a statewide network of community-based organizations from Maryland’s western mountains to its Eastern Shore. Last year, the Maryland Food Bank distributed enough food to provide the equivalent of more than 41 million meals, or about 114,000 meals every day. This healthy food supports children, seniors, veterans, and hard-working families. Beyond food distribution, MFB works to end hunger for more Marylanders by offering job training programs, access to supportive services and benefits, and by advocating to change to the laws, policies, and practices that create food insecurity for more than 1 in 3 Marylanders.

About the position:
The Staff Writer is Maryland Food Bank’s primary storyteller, creating compelling digital and print content that informs and engages key audiences. In partnership with the Director of Content Strategy, this role translates organizational priorities, data, research, and first-person stories into content that builds trust and advances MFB’s mission.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Create and publish compelling storytelling content across digital and print channels, including blogs, emails, website content, donor publications, annual reports, and grant materials.
- Write, edit, and adapt content that is clear, accurate, accessible, and consistent with MFB’s voice, messaging, and editorial standards.
- Conduct interviews, research, analysis, and other story-gathering activities to develop impactful, mission-aligned stories.
- Translate organizational themes, data, and strategy into engaging content for diverse audiences.
- Manage multiple concurrent content projects, independently prioritizing work and meeting overlapping deadlines.
- Develop content strategies tailored to the audience, objective, channel, and desired action.
- Use audience insights and content-performance data to strengthen storytelling and improve effectiveness.
- Develop and execute content for integrated campaigns that support organizational priorities and engage key audiences.
- Partner with designers, digital staff, vendors, leadership, and colleagues to deliver high-quality print and digital products on time and within budget.
- Serve as a primary Marketing & Communications contact for storytelling needs across the organization, providing stories, quotes, and content support to internal teams.
Basic Qualifications:
- Three (3) to five (5) years of professional writing and content-development experience across print and digital channels.
- Exceptional writing, interviewing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate organizational themes into compelling, respectful content.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
- Experience planning and coordinating content in a collaborative or matrixed environment.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and identify solutions.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and project-management tools, with the ability to learn new platforms quickly.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing, communications, or a related field.
- Experience in a nonprofit, marketing, agency, journalism, publishing, or other content-focused environment.
- Experience creating content that engages audiences around food insecurity, equity, or other complex social issues.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and applying new skills to strengthen content and storytelling.

Supervisory Responsibility:
- This position has no direct supervisory responsibility.
Work Environment:
- This is a hybrid role, requiring on-site presence at least three (3) days per week.
- Flexible schedules, including occasional evenings, weekends, and travel to events and other MFB locations.
- This position operates primarily in an office environment with occasional movement around the warehouse.
Pay Range:
- $62,000 - $67,000 / Annually
