Summary

The Scaffold Builder Apprentice assists in the erection, modification, and dismantling of scaffolding systems used to support construction, maintenance, and turnaround activities in industrial environments. Under the direction of experienced Scaffold Builders and supervisors, the apprentice learns proper scaffold building techniques, safety procedures, and industry standards while performing assigned tasks safely and efficiently.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous construction or industrial experience is preferred but not required.
• Must be willing to learn scaffold-building techniques and safety requirements.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Basic knowledge of hand and power tools preferred.
• Strong commitment to safety, attendance, and quality workmanship.
• Ability to follow instructions and perform work under direct supervision.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain site-specific safety training and customer-required certifications.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Basic knowledge of scaffold components, materials, and scaffold systems, including frame, tube and clamp, and system scaffolding.
• Basic knowledge of construction and industrial work environments, safety procedures, and OSHA regulations related to scaffold operations and fall protection.
• Knowledge of proper material handling techniques, tool usage, and safe work practices.
• Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, measuring devices, and scaffold-building equipment.
• Ability to learn scaffold erection, modification, inspection, and dismantling techniques under the direction of experienced personnel.
• Ability to read and understand basic work instructions, safety procedures, drawings, and scaffold tags.
• Ability to identify scaffold components, recognize damaged materials, and report deficiencies to supervision.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills with the ability to work effectively alongside scaffold builders, leadmen, foremen, and other craft personnel.
• Ability to follow instructions, accept coaching, and apply training in a safe and productive manner.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work while maintaining productivity and attention to detail.
• Ability to work safely at heights, in confined spaces, and in active construction and industrial environments.

Essential Functions

• Assist with the erection, modification, and dismantling of various scaffold systems, including frame, tube and clamp, and system scaffolds.
• Load, unload, sort, stage, and transport scaffold materials and components.
• Help install scaffold decking, guardrails, toe boards, access ladders, stair towers, and fall protection systems.
• Inspect scaffold components for damage, defects, and serviceability prior to use.
• Assist in maintaining scaffold material inventory and organization of work areas.
• Follow scaffold drawings, work instructions, and direction provided by supervisors and competent persons.
• Utilize proper rigging and material handling techniques when moving scaffold materials.
• Perform housekeeping duties to maintain a clean and safe work environment.
• Work closely with scaffold crews and other crafts to support project objectives.
• Learn and comply with OSHA requirements, company policies, customer requirements, and scaffold industry best practices.
• Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and required certifications.
• Properly use and maintain tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Report unsafe conditions, incidents, and damaged equipment to supervision immediately.

• Perform other duties as assigned to support project operations.

Physical Demands

• Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull scaffold materials, tools, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds; occasionally heavier weights with assistance.
• Regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, and climb ladders, stair towers, and scaffold structures.
• Perform repetitive motions involving the hands, wrists, arms, and shoulders while handling scaffold components and tools.
• Work at elevated heights while utilizing required fall protection equipment.
• Utilize manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to assemble and secure scaffold components.
• Work in confined spaces, awkward positions, and difficult-access locations as required.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to:
• hard hat, safety glasses, face shield, gloves, hearing protection, FR clothing, steel-toed footwear, FR clothing, fall protection, respiratory protection and other project-specific PPE.

Work Environment

• Works primarily in industrial construction, maintenance, turnaround, refinery, petrochemical, power generation, marine, and manufacturing environments.
• Frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, humidity, rain, and wind.
• Performs work at elevated heights, in confined spaces, and around active construction and industrial operations.
• Regularly exposed to noise, dust, vibration, and other industrial job site conditions.
• May work around heavy equipment, moving machinery, energized systems, and process operations while adhering to all safety requirements.
