Description: SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Start or expand your environmental career at the City of San Marcos’ Watershed Program! Are you looking for hands-on experience in environmental regulation? Join our team as a Part-Time Watershed Inspector. This isn’t just a role—it’s a chance to build your resume and gain technical field experience while directly protecting our local water quality.
You’ll spend the majority of your time in the field, where you’ll play a key role in following up on community concerns and helping resolve stormwater pollution concerns. Working under the direction of the Watershed Program Manager and supervision of the Watershed Administrator, you will be a vital part of the team assisting in the implementation of the City’s Stormwater Municipal Code.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Field Investigations (Primary):
- Perform patrols and investigations related to the Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination (IDDE) program.
- Respond to and document watershed concerns reported by the public or internal staff.
- Schedule and perform follow-up inspections to ensure continued environmental health.
- Verify inventories for Structural Best Management Practices (SBMPs).
- Participate in occasional weekend outreach events to connect with the community.
- Data, Excel & Office Support (Occasional):
- Maintain inventories and databases for permit tracking requirements, utilize Excel to analyze numerical data and organize it for management review.
- Prepare enforcement correspondence in accordance with the City's Enforcement Response Plan.
- Draft or update written Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the Watershed Program.
- Assist with the development and review of public education, outreach, and training materials.
- Community Collaboration:
- Build positive working relationships with co-workers and the public using excellent customer service.
HOURS REQUIRED
While flexible based on the candidate’s personal schedule, the successful candidate will work an average of 20 hours per week. As a part-time employee, the Watershed Inspector may work up to 999 hours per fiscal year. Scheduled hours will depend upon the Department’s need and budget approval.

Benefits:
This is a part time non-benefited position, however effective 07/01/2015 part time employees will receive 1 hour of sick leave accrual per 30 hours worked. Employees in this category are eligible to use up to 27 hours per year and are able to carry over up to 54 sick leave hours per year.
