Job Description
The Facilities Technician I maintains our buildings to ensure a clean safe, functional environment, handling routine tasks, emergency repairs, preventative maintenance, groundskeeping, and event setup, as well as supporting other various infrastructure needs.
Responsibilities
- Perform daily custodial duties, including offices, staff, and public areas.
- Maintain all exterior common areas free from debris and animal waste; sweep and wash exterior hardscapes, pressure wash as necessary.
- Maintain exterior landscaped areas. Perform pruning, trimming, and shaping of trees, shrubs, and hedges to maintain health and aesthetic appeal.
- Maintain all floor surfaces, operate carpet cleaning equipment and floor stripping, waxing, and buffing equipment.
- Operate laundry equipment and provide laundry pickup and delivery to departments throughout the facility.
- Assist with donation pick-up, delivery, and storage.
- Relocate furniture and equipment as requested; set up temporary events.
- Perform general off-site errands as assigned.
Apprentice Responsibilities
- Assist in performing general facilities maintenance tasks including, but not limited to, painting, basic carpentry, and general repairs.
- Support the repair, replacement, or maintenance of minor mechanical equipment.
- Assist other departments with repair/maintenance projects as assigned.
Safety and Security
- Responsible for maintaining a safe and secure campus: opening/closing the campus in preparation for client/staff use and always keeping exterior doors secure throughout shift.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area at all times.
- Maintain all supplies and equipment in working condition; keep supervisor apprised of supply and equipment needs.
- Follow internal protocols, local and state laws and OSHA regulations for all projects, equipment operation, and chemical usage including labeling, storage, disposal, and the use of personal protective equipment.
- Participate in disaster recovery plan and preparations in the event of serious safety situation.
- Participate in upkeep of facility security systems, fire alarm systems, fire extinguishers.
- Take immediate action to correct any safety noncompliance that could put an employee, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Work is performed in a garage, kennel/shelter setting, outdoors, and occasionally on the roof.
- Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, climbing stairs, walking and standing on feet 8-10 hours per day while performing job functions.
- Exposure to various weather conditions when working outdoors.
- Frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation.
- Exposure to noise, dust, cleaning agents, chemicals, and varying temperatures.
- Exposure to animals and animal care environments.
- Regular sitting at a computer workstation.
- Consistently exposed to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alterations available.
- High School Diploma or equivalent; ability to read and write English and perform basic math
- Valid CA driver’s license and insurable driving record required
- Good organizational and problem-solving skills
- Effective verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of custodial methods and basic handyman ability
- Proven ability to complete projects in a timely manner
- Knowledge of safety and cost containment programs a plus
- Basic computer skills in a Windows environment
- Willingness to accommodate animals in the workplace.

Salary & Benefits
The starting salary for this position depends on the depth and breadth of experience. The expected range is $25-$27 per hour.
