Sonographer II

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Responsible for the independent, competent performance of all procedures according to set protocols in both cardiac and vascular ultrasound. Ensures procedures are performed within designated time frames with appropriate order. Safely and proficiently operates ultrasound and associated equipment. Recognizes significant and life-threatening abnormalities, acquires appropriate diagnostic information, and images and accurately communicates and documents results of diagnostic examinations in preliminary reports. Performs job duties in multiple venues, including hospital, clinic, and multiple mobile sites.

Responsible for organizing and assisting with daily operations of the echo/vascular laboratory. Thoroughly completes all paperwork, including patient scheduling and communication, documentation, report distribution and charges. Responsible for maintaining supplies, reporting equipment failures, and assisting with quality assessment (QA), protocol development, IAC accreditation and PACs implementation.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

10. Freely shares knowledge and skills to encourage growth and development of the Sonographer I, encouraging and assisting with cross training.

11. *Competently performs diagnostic procedures including but not limited to adult cardiac ultrasound, pediatric cardiac ultrasound, and/or vascular ultrasound in accordance with established policies and procedures.

12. *Performs quantitative calculations from data obtained and records preliminary impression where applicable.

13. *Provides the reading physician with adequate diagnostic information necessary to generate final report; notifies physician if results require immediate attention.

14. *Performs routine equipment maintenance and departmental maintenance including cleaning, disinfection and use of appropriate solutions.

15. *Transports patients and medical equipment within the department and facility.

16. May cross-train to perform additional non-invasive diagnostic procedures including but not limited to electrocardiograms, long-term cardiac monitors and exercise stress testing.

17. Informs leadership of any patient, equipment or environmental safety concerns.

18. Communicates/interfaces with facility personnel, medical staff, patients, families and outside agencies to ensure quality patient care.

19. Maintains a safe and positive working environment.

20. Participates in departmental quality initiatives and lab accreditation (with ICAEL/ICAVL) activities.

21. Participation in after-hours, weekend and holiday on call rotation required. Must be able to respond within 30 minutes of activation.

22. Participates in training of ultrasound students and new hire on boarding and orientation.

23. Operates mobile ultrasound equipment in all areas of the hospital.

24. Provides education to patients or patient representatives regarding the procedure(s) performed.

25. Accesses and administers ultrasound enhancing agents as clinically indicated and in accordance with Medical Center policies and procedures.

26. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program or Cardiovascular Technology Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is required. Bachelor of Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography or health related field is preferred.

Credential in the following registry specialties required:

a. Adult Cardiac Sonography: RDCS-AE (ARDMS) -or- RCS (CCI)

b. Vascular Technology: RVT (ARDMS) -or- RVS (CCI)

Experience in pediatric echo adequate to perform pediatric studies in the clinic, at the hospital and when on call required within one (1) year of hire, if no prior experience.

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Basic Life Support (CPR) with AED certification required within 30 days of start date. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network.

Valid driver’s license required. Verification and maintenance of responsible driving record per facility standards required.
