This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of a growing portfolio of SME and startup clients while shaping high-quality accounting and tax services in a fast-scaling, tech-enabled environment. You will act as a trusted advisor, managing end-to-end tax compliance and advisory work while ensuring accuracy, regulatory compliance, and excellent client outcomes. In addition to client-facing responsibilities, you will guide and support a distributed bookkeeping team, helping maintain high standards across financial operations. This position combines technical tax expertise, leadership, and client relationship management in a dynamic environment focused on innovation and continuous improvement. You will also work closely with modern accounting tools and AI-enabled systems to streamline workflows and enhance service delivery. - Manage a portfolio of SME and startup clients, providing end-to-end accounting, tax compliance, and advisory services tailored to their needs.
- Oversee BAS preparation, tax return lodgment, and all associated compliance obligations with accuracy and timeliness.
- Represent clients in dealings with the ATO, ensuring compliance and acting as a trusted tax advisor.
- Provide technical guidance, oversight, and quality control for bookkeeping and accounting work delivered by remote teams.
- Lead, mentor, and support a team of bookkeepers and tax professionals, fostering development and high performance.
- Ensure financial records are accurate, up to date, and compliant with Australian tax regulations and reporting standards.
- Advise clients on tax planning, financial structuring, and business decisions to support long-term growth.
- Collaborate with internal teams to improve accounting processes, systems, and service delivery efficiency.
- Manage multiple client deadlines while maintaining high standards of service and professionalism.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field.
- Mandatory registration as an individual Tax Agent with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB).
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a practising tax accountant managing SME client portfolios (including companies, trusts, and sole traders).
- At least 2 years of experience in a leadership or team management role overseeing bookkeepers and/or accountants.
- Strong understanding of Australian tax regulations, BAS lodgment, and compliance requirements.
- Proficiency with accounting tools such as Xero Practice Manager, Dext, A2X, and similar platforms.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly explain complex tax matters to clients.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing deadlines and priorities.
- High level of professionalism, integrity, and client service orientation.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, remote-friendly environment.
