The hours for this position are Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm.
This role is 100% on site at our Headquarters location: 946 Quality Drive, Lancaster, SC 29720.
Summary:
Under the guidance of the Senior Packaging Engineer and Purchasing Manager, the Packaging Engineer will be involved in the packaging design and development process, the design and layout of packaging processes and the creation/maintenance of all supporting packaging documentation for existing and new products. This position considers all steps of the packaging process from the design and procurement of packaging materials through the packaging and shipping of finished products and interacts with New Product Development, Manufacturing, Sales and Marketing, Quality, Purchasing, Graphics and Planning.
Responsibilities:
· Maintains packaging material specifications database and updates SAP with relevant packaging information
· Initiates change controls and authors critical packaging documents including packaging component specifications, packaging batch records, deviations, non-conformances, rework protocols, SOPs, etc.
· Works with packaging suppliers to ensure that the proper technical specifications are obtained and are in place
· Coordinates packaging sample requests when needed for new designs, new equipment, sales presentations, trial runs, etc.
· Initiates Item Number Requests for packaging components
· Designs new packaging configurations for existing and new delivery systems
· Researches, sources and approves packaging materials and components
· Identifies and recommends equipment based on packaging needs
· Works with Product Development to identify proper stability plans and configurations for new products, new formulations and/or new skus
· Provides BOMs (Bill of Materials) to Purchasing, Product Development and Operations to ensure all material combinations are ordered
· Creates pallet configurations using TOPS
· Troubleshoots problems on packaging lines – torque, induction sealing, metal detection, etc.
· Works with external manufacturing and packaging facilities to ensure that Nutramax’s packaging needs and quality expectations are met
· Remains current on new packaging materials and technologies
· Assists in Complaint Investigations as they relate to packaging components (leakers, short counts, empty blisters, damage, etc.)
· Works with the Maintenance Department and Operations Department to ensure the proper tooling is ordered for new packaging components if needed
· Identifies and implements ways to decrease cost and improve packaging efficiencies
· Coordinates/Conducts testing on packaging components when needed
· Reviews and approves packaging artwork, printer proofs and 3D renderings
· Communicate effectively with other departments within the organization and function within a team environment
· Monitor packaging/printed material inventory levels for correct delivery dates to avoid inventory outages
· Place printed material purchase orders based on approvals and lead times
· Enter PPMRs in Wrike to coordinate any updates with SMEs
· Place purchase orders for packaging materials
· Perform other assigned duties as may be required in meeting company objectives
· Regular attendance is required
Requirements:· A minimum of 2 years of Package Engineering/Design experience
· Excellent written, interpersonal and oral communication skills a must
· Strong skills in scientific technique, problem solving, time management and cost savings required
· Ability to work collaboratively with both internal team and external team
· Must be detail oriented
· Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a team environment under tight deadlines
· Excellent written and communication skills
· Must be proficient in MS Office Suite, TOPS and CAD
· Experience in a GMP production and/or pharmaceutical environment is a plus
· Strong understanding of Graphic Design and Printing is a plus

Education:
BS/BA in Packaging Science, Package Engineering or related field required
Minor or emphasis in Graphic Communications, Graphic Design or related field is a plus
