JOB SUMMARY
The Nurse Trainer serves primarily as an educator and facilitator for new and current non-medical employees. The Nurse Trainer will use development, monitoring and evaluation of health related services, agency policies, agency procedures, in-service training, and various training initiatives for new employees during their orientation period and as continuing education for current employees all of which comply with federal, state, agency and service regulations in an effort to ensure the health and safety of the individuals served.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Instruct and enforce the use of services, policies, and procedures related to health needs and regulations for the agency’s supervised individuals while serving as a participant advocate
- Participate in the orientation of new employees through contributions to orientation and job-specific course development; providing core curriculum training; providing support throughout orientation and training focusing on health and wellness, which includes but is not limited to the following training topics: universal precautions; personal care; confidentiality of an individual’s information; Medication administration and medication side effects, which includes but is not limited to the following training topics: medication administration and side effects; competency in medication administration documentation
- Provide employee in-service trainings as required to ensure appropriate implementation of health services, medication administration, policies and procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, Medication Curriculum, CPR, First Aid, and Universal Precautions
- Proctor competency testing for all required medical trainings
- Provide instructional services to newly hired staff, including all Direct Support Professional Staff, who will undergo competency verification based on initial orientation training focusing on health and wellness, which includes but is not limited to the following training topics: universal precautions; personal care; confidentiality of an individual’s information ;Medication administration and medication side effects, which includes but is not limited to the following training topics: medication administration and side effects; competency in medication administration documentation
- Maintain and/or monitor document progress through completion of training process or maintenance of current employee records, reports, and staff educational requirements
- Assures that staff follows policies and procedures correctly and interprets policies and procedures to them as needed
- Monitor development and implementation of health related task for new and/or established staff members with goals, objectives and instructional activities established upon hire and per policy
- Respond to medical emergencies as needed.
- Responsible for on call rotation for Residential Services as needed.
- Responsible for returning calls from the on call pager for emergency or urgent medical situations as needed.
- Other responsibilities as requested by the Agency Training Director, Director of Nursing or Chief Human Resources Officer.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Prolonged periods of standing, bending, and reaching
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent time management skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong leadership skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Employee must be able to provide immediate and effective feedback to employees concerning behavior and performance
EDUCATION
- Must possess a valid Registered Nurse License issued by the Indiana Health Professions Bureau (proof of valid license must accompany application)
- Minimum of two years’ experience in nursing related position
- Preferred certified CPR/AED & First Aid instructor, or enrolled and completed certification within first 4 months of hire date
