Position SummaryThe Crater is responsible for building, assembling, and securing wooden crates and other protective packaging for products, machinery, and equipment. This role ensures that every item is packaged safely and efficiently for storage or transportation while meeting company quality standards, customer specifications, and workplace safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities- Review work orders, drawings, measurements, and packaging specifications.
- Measure products and determine the appropriate crate dimensions and materials.
- Cut, assemble, and reinforce wooden crates, pallets, skids, and protective supports.
- Use hand and power tools safely, including saws, drills, nail guns, hammers, and measuring equipment.
- Position, block, brace, cushion, wrap, and secure products to prevent damage during transit.
- Inspect finished crates for strength, accuracy, stability, and compliance with specifications.
- Label packages and complete required shipping or production documentation.
- Operate material-handling equipment when trained and authorized.
- Maintain tools, equipment, materials, and a clean, organized work area.
- Follow safety procedures and report hazards, damage, or quality concerns promptly.
- Work with warehouse, production, quality, and shipping teams to meet deadlines.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Experience in carpentry, woodworking, construction, packaging, manufacturing, or warehousing is preferred.
- Ability to read a tape measure and perform basic mathematical calculations accurately.
- Ability to interpret basic drawings, work orders, and written instructions.
- Working knowledge of hand and power tools.
- Strong attention to detail, reliability, and commitment to quality.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, reach, and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds, with assistance for heavier items.
- Ability to work in a warehouse or production environment that may include noise, dust, and changing temperatures.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.
- Custom crate fabrication and industrial packaging experience.
- Forklift or overhead-crane certification.
- Knowledge of safe load-securing and shipping practices.
- Basic inventory-control and documentation skills.
Success in this role is measured by packaging quality, measurement accuracy, safe work practices, material efficiency, productivity, on-time completion, and the prevention of product damage.
