About The Role

The General Helper in the Machine Shop is an hourly, full-time position that supports daily production by assisting machinists, operators, and supervisors with a variety of basic, hands-on tasks. This role helps maintain a clean, safe, and efficient work environment, prepares materials and parts for machining, and performs routine duties that keep machines and workflows running smoothly. It is an excellent opportunity for someone who is mechanically inclined, eager to learn, and interested in developing skills in a machine shop setting.

What You'll Do

• Assist machinists and machine operators with day-to-day tasks, including preparing materials, components, and work areas
• Load and unload materials, parts, and finished products from machines, workstations, and storage areas
• Perform basic material handling, including moving items with carts, pallet jacks, or other approved equipment
• Clean and organize work areas, tools, and equipment to maintain a safe and efficient shop environment
• Remove chips, scrap, and waste materials from machines and dispose of them according to shop procedures
• Support routine machine setups by supplying tools, fixtures, and materials as directed by senior staff
• Perform basic measurements and visual inspections of parts as instructed, using simple hand tools or gauges
• Follow written and verbal instructions, work orders, and shop procedures accurately and consistently
• Assist with receiving, labeling, and storing raw materials and supplies in designated areas
• Report any unsafe conditions, equipment issues, or quality concerns to a supervisor promptly
• Comply with all safety rules, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and housekeeping standards
• Participate in on-the-job training to learn basic machine shop practices and support continuous improvement initiatives

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
• Prior experience in a manufacturing, warehouse, construction, or similar hands-on environment preferred but not required
• Basic mechanical aptitude and interest in learning about machine shop operations and equipment
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions in English, including safety guidelines and work procedures
• Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift materials (typically up to 50 lbs) throughout the shift
• Willingness to work in a shop environment with noise, dust, oils, and frequent manual handling of materials
• Strong work ethic, reliability, and punctuality, with the ability to work full-time scheduled hours
• Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area
• Ability to work cooperatively with coworkers and supervisors and communicate respectfully in a team environment
• Flexibility to perform a variety of tasks and adapt to changing production priorities
