Metallurgist in Colchester, Vermont at HAZELETT CORPORATION

We are looking for a dedicated, self-motivated, technically curious individual to join the Hazelett team as a Metallurgist. Our preferred candidate will possess a strong understanding of metallurgy, metallography, material characterization, heat treating, and industrial metal processing, with the ability to apply technical analysis to practical process and product quality challenges.

This position will oversee daily Materials Laboratory technical functions, support research and development, assist in-house Engineering and Manufacturing, and provide metallurgical support to customers. The role offers the opportunity to work hands-on with laboratory analysis, troubleshooting, technical reporting, customer training, and Hazelett process development. It may require domestic and international travel, including visits to customer sites.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

• Oversee everyday Materials Laboratory technical functions, including laboratory team leadership, task planning, scheduling, and coordination of supporting personnel.
• Provide metallurgical analysis of various materials for research and development, in-house Engineering and Manufacturing support, and external customer support; develop recommendations based on analysis results.
• Provide technical support for customers, including remote support and visits to customer sites as required.
• Train customers, when appropriate, in metallurgy, metallography, and Hazelett process fundamentals to support improved understanding of product quality and process performance.
• Perform failure analyses and prepare clear, technically sound reports documenting findings, conclusions, and recommended corrective actions.
• Provide metallurgical process troubleshooting related to cast and rolled product quality for copper, aluminum, zinc, and steel applications, as well as downstream aluminum processing.
• Generate new specifications for materials and heat-treating procedures as part of the Hazelett quality system.
• Oversee the Materials Laboratory’s adherence to Quality Management System requirements, including documentation, procedures, and compliance expectations.
• Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Process Engineering, Field Service, Sales, and Quality teams to support process improvement, product quality, and customer success.
• Maintain and expand Hazelett metallurgical knowledge by developing technical papers, training materials, process guidelines, laboratory procedures, and internal best practices.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

• Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Experience with metallurgical analysis, metallography, material characterization, heat treating, failure analysis, and technical report writing.
• Experience with continuous casting, cast and rolled products, copper, aluminum, zinc, steel, or related industrial metal processing operations.
• Strong understanding of solidification, alloy behavior, heat transfer, defect mechanisms, mechanical properties, and process-property relationships.
• Ability to interpret laboratory results, production data, customer samples, defect reports, and process conditions to develop practical recommendations.
• Experience working within a Quality Management System and generating or maintaining material specifications, laboratory procedures, or heat-treating requirements.
• Strong leadership, organization, and communication skills, including the ability to plan laboratory work, coordinate supporting personnel, and explain technical concepts clearly.,
• Ability and desire to travel domestically and internationally to support customers and Hazelett field activities. Prior twin-belt casting or Hazelett process experience is preferred but not required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Duties will be carried out at customer and supplier sites, in an office environment, and manufacturing production floor as required, which might include occasional exposure to fumes, noise, and gases from equipment or machinery. They must be able to work in these environments for extended periods of time and be able to do light lifting. The employee must utilize personal safety equipment when working in any production environment. Extensive travel to attend meetings and visit customers is required.

The base pay range for this full-time position is $60,000 – $120,000 Your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. In addition, our ranges are determined by role, level, and location.
