Job Description
The Director, Nonprofit & Small Business Legal Assistance Programs (NPSB) leads the Pro Bono Center’s NPSB programs, which provide legal counsel and support to local nonprofit community-based organizations and disadvantaged small businesses through pro bono legal services, nonprofit and small business clinics, and educational training programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides day-to-day leadership, management, coaching, and mentoring to direct reports.
- Recruits and retains a diverse workforce and works to create an inclusive environment for all department staff.
- Builds NPSB's reputation and visibility on a national level, positioning the Program as a leader in nonprofit and small business legal assistance.
- Develops the strategy and vision for NPSB including long-term planning, priority development, selection of target client organizations and businesses. Responsible for expanding partnerships, providing direction of the Programs’ activities, services, trainings, and initiatives, as well as evaluating programmatic impact.
- Directs the provision of substantive legal advice and guidance to the Programs’ staff and volunteers.
- Identifies, sets, develops, and implements revenue-generating initiatives for the financial sustainability of the Program, including developing new revenue models and funding practices.
- Directs services provided at the Pro Bono Center’s nonprofit and small business clinics, including on-going legal representation by the Programs’ staff and volunteer lawyers and the training program.
- Leads outreach to create awareness of the Programs' services and collaborates with other service providers and stakeholders.
- Oversees compliance and quality control systems for intakes, screening, case placement, and management processes, ensuring compliance with ethical requirements and Pro Bono Center policies.
- Directs the training program to educate community-based nonprofit organizations and small businesses about legal issues affecting their organizations and businesses.
- Leads the ongoing cultivation and recruitment of volunteers in collaboration with other Pro Bono Center projects. Maintains relationships with law firms, D.C. Bar communities, and other volunteer groups.
- Prepares annual and periodic reports to funders, the Board of Directors, and others, including narrative and statistical summaries.
- Serves in the senior management of the Pro Bono Center. Participates and is a liaison in meetings of the Pro Bono Committee (and their subcommittees) and the Board of Directors.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
- An active member of the D.C. Bar.
- Direct managerial experience.
- Practice experience with an emphasis on transactional practice, such as corporate, tax, real estate, zoning, financing, or other business law expertise, with substantial experience in the nonprofit sector as either a corporate or pro bono counsel.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends for a variety of Pro Bono Center clinics and events.
- Demonstrated success in planning, developing, implementing and administering programs.
- Ability to represent the Pro Bono Center effectively in public meetings and events.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Must be detail oriented and deadline driven. Able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Must work well in a team environment and be able to interact, including in-person, with Bar members, volunteers, vendors, the public and Pro Bono Center and Bar employees.
- Must work well under pressure, possess excellent organizational abilities, and able to manage several priorities in a day.
- Must be adaptable, creative, and self-motivated.
- Ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in volunteer management.
- Familiarity with D.C. law and practice, including the D.C. nonprofit and/or small business community.
- Experience working with D.C. government agencies.
This position is currently a hybrid position, with days worked in the office and days worked remotely. The hybrid status of this position may change at any time subject to the Pro Bono Center’s discretion.
