We operate four popular cafes in Marin and have a wholesale production division making flatbread crackers, cookies and crisps in Petaluma with products sold nationally by fine retailers throughout the US. POSITION SUMMARY
The Machine Operator is required to set up and operate all equipment in an assigned area. They ensure that the equipment is running efficiently and to quality standards. They communicate changes and plans to the staff and take direction from their department Lead, Quality Assurance and other management personnel. They also complete the daily logs. Good communication skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of preventive controls and food safety protocols are a must. OT hours may be required based on work demand. Regularly scheduled hours will be 9:00pm or 10:00pm to 5:30 or 6:30am, Sunday through Thursday (and Friday during busy season, the 6th day will qualify for overtime). All third shift positions earn an extra $1.00/hour in addition to the base rate.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Sets up and operates all equipment in an assigned area.
- Ensures the product meets size, weight and shape specifications. Physically and visually inspects products to prevent non-conforming goods.
- Reports all quality defects to the appropriate team members and shift leadership.
- Accurately completes hourly quality and production reports.
- Adheres to the highest standards of company and plant safety programs, guidelines, rules, regulations and use of PPE.
- Maintains a clean and safe workspace which includes general housekeeping in all areas of production and additional areas assigned by plant leadership.
- Maintains appropriate level of raw materials as required, to ensure production lines incur minimal downtime.
- Demonstrates the aptitude and skill to work in all assigned areas of production and performs relief duties when required.
- Performs changeover of the lines in required time frames with line associates.
- Troubleshoots minor production line issues, equipment errors and malfunctions.
- Follows established sanitary production guidelines and all GMP for the work area. Understands products, allergens, and methods to ensure safe, quality food.
- Transports waste, rework and trash to the appropriate areas in coordination with line associates.
- Train employees as directed by plant leadership.
- Performs other related duties as required.
SKILLS and QUALIFICATIONS
- Good oral and written communication skills; prefer Spanish/English bilingual.
- Communicates effectively and accurately, both verbally and in writing. (English & Spanish).
- Shows good judgment, sound reasoning, and good decision-making skills.
- Ability to use a calculator to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Must be able to accurately record results.
- Ability to work Sunday through Thursdays (and Fridays during the busy season), overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- 2 - 3 years of related experience working in food manufacturing. Additional education may be substituted for years of work experience.
- Previous Machine Operating experience within a food manufacturing facility preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Continually required to stand and walk; stands during entire shift.

- Frequently reaches, bends, stoops, lifts, carries, and pushes.
- Regularly required to twist and turn body while standing.
- Occasionally required to climb, balance, kneel or crawl.
- Continually required to talk or hear.
- Continually utilize visual acuity to operate equipment and manipulate product.
- Regularly required to lift/push/carry items up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Regularly required to work near moving mechanical parts.
- Occasionally exposed to extreme heat.
- Regular exposure to moderate to loud noise consistent with a manufacturing operation.
- Frequently required to wash hands.
