This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Database Architect/Administrator based in the United States.
This senior-level role offers the opportunity to design, maintain, and optimize complex database environments supporting mission-critical digital services.
You’ll play a key role in shaping enterprise data architecture, standards, performance, scalability, and security.
The position combines hands-on database engineering with architectural planning, solution development, and technical leadership.
You’ll collaborate closely with developers and engineering teams to establish strong database practices and deliver reliable data solutions.
The role provides significant autonomy, allowing you to influence technical decisions and contribute to program-level standards and engineering practices.
You’ll also mentor other database professionals and help strengthen the team’s technical capabilities.
Most importantly, your work will support technology that helps Veterans and their families access important government services efficiently and securely.
- Take ownership of implementing, maintaining, and optimizing one or more complex enterprise databases.
- Analyze, design, develop, test, debug, and implement data solutions that meet or exceed defined architectural and functional requirements.
- Contribute to database architecture, prototyping, proof-of-concept development, technical standards, design specifications, and test plans.
- Assist with the planning, engineering, and ongoing evolution of enterprise database environments.
- Monitor database performance, scalability, reliability, and security, identifying opportunities for optimization and improvement.
- Evaluate existing database designs and determine required updates, integrations, and architectural enhancements for new solutions.
- Design and implement efficient database solutions aligned with enterprise architecture and organizational needs.
- Lead and mentor database administrators and other team members, providing guidance on technical practices, standards, and database engineering.
- Conduct SQL code reviews and collaborate with software developers to establish and enforce database development best practices.
- Support database partitioning strategies, microservices architectures, and large-scale enterprise solutions.
- Work with Database Schema as Code practices and related tooling to improve consistency, traceability, and deployment efficiency.
- Contribute to security initiatives by supporting vulnerability identification, remediation, and secure database practices.
- Operate with substantial autonomy when making technical decisions and resolving complex database engineering challenges.
- 5+ years of experience supporting engineering efforts involving system design and evaluation, solution engineering, software development, or system administration.
- 3+ years of experience working with complex build systems.
- Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring other DBAs, particularly within Oracle-based environments.
- Experience with Database Schema as Code tools and practices.
- Proven experience designing large-scale enterprise solutions.
- Strong understanding of database partitioning and microservices architectures.
- Experience reviewing SQL change sets and working collaboratively with developers to establish and enforce database best practices.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate complex database environments and develop effective solutions.
- Ability to work independently with substantial latitude for technical decision-making and ownership.
- Familiarity with Process Playbook is desirable but not required.
- Previous experience supporting federal government or VA.gov digital services is highly desirable.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Public Trust Security Clearance.
- Experience analyzing and tuning database queries for improved performance is a plus.
- Experience with Liquibase or similar database source-control and deployment tools is preferred.
- Familiarity with security scanning tools, including configuration, vulnerability identification, and remediation coordination, is beneficial.
- Experience with ETL and data warehousing methodologies is a plus.
- Experience installing, maintaining, and administering PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, or other non-Oracle relational database management systems is advantageous.
