Mechanical Design Engineer
(Direct Placement for Client)
Sigma Design has collaborated with a growing manufacturing company seeking an experienced Machine Design Engineer to join their team in the Tri Cities, WA area. This company specializes in the design and manufacture of custom food processing equipment used in industrial food production, supporting projects for well-known food manufacturers.

Primary Function:
The Machine Design Engineer designs custom packaging and processing equipment and manages assigned projects from concept through fabrication, installation, commissioning, and startup. This role works closely with engineering, sales, manufacturing, vendors, and customers to develop practical, manufacturable solutions for both standalone equipment and integrated systems.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop custom machinery and equipment based on customer requirements and project specifications.
  • Create and maintain detailed mechanical designs, drawings, assemblies, and models using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Work closely with the manufacturing shop to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and aligned with project requirements.
  • Support projects throughout the design, fabrication, assembly, installation, commissioning, and startup phases.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, coordinating schedules, requirements, materials, and communication to ensure projects remain on track and are completed on schedule.
  • Review and modify designs based on manufacturing feedback, testing, field conditions, and customer requirements.
  • Take increasing ownership of projects as technical knowledge and familiarity with the company's equipment and processes develops.
  • Support troubleshooting, design improvements, and modifications to equipment during fabrication, testing, installation, and startup.
  • Develop and maintain accurate engineering documentation, including drawings, models, bills of materials, and project documentation.
  • Participate in customer site visits, equipment commissioning, and startup activities as needed.
  • Occasionally represent the company at industry trade shows and customer events.
Education and Experience: (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field preferred, but equivalent hands-on machinery design experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 3+ years of relevant machine or mechanical design experience.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks is required.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Navis is preferred.
  • Experience designing machinery, custom equipment, industrial equipment, agricultural equipment, or other complex mechanical systems.
  • Ability to create and interpret detailed mechanical drawings and 3D models.
  • Demonstrated understanding of practical machine design and manufacturability.
  • Experience working directly with manufacturing, fabrication, or machine shop environments is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple aspects of a project and work toward established deadlines.
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to learn and work with ERP systems; experience with Total ETO is a plus.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with engineering, manufacturing, sales, vendors, and customers.
  • Leadership experience or the ability to take ownership and coordinate projects is a plus.
  • Food processing equipment experience is preferred but not required. Candidates with machinery design experience from other industries, including custom equipment or agricultural equipment, will be considered.
  • Must be comfortable occasionally traveling throughout the United States for equipment commissioning, startup, customer projects, or trade shows. Travel is expected to be occasional and generally limited to no man than approximately two weeks at a time.
  • Must successfully complete a post offer background verification.

Work Environment
Office: Standard office environment with normal office related conditions. Occasionally may be required to travel as required to other facilities, clients, or suppliers.
