Job Description

Description:

The Assistant Director of Nursing serves as the second-in-command of the Wellness department and the Director of Nursing's closest working partner. The ADON shares day-to-day responsibility for resident care oversight, medication management, care plan accuracy, staff supervision across all three shifts, family communication, and regulatory readiness. Beyond supporting the DON, this position is expected to function as a genuine extension of Director-level leadership — carrying full authority, judgment, and accountability for the department during the DON's scheduled days off, PTO, and any unplanned absence, without a drop in standards or a pause in decision-making.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for assisting in the management, directing, and supervision of the following functions: nursing, laboratory, pharmacy, and activities.
  • Responsible for staff performance, staff recruitment, staff retention, and staff development.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Helps define and maintain the standards of nursing practice in the community.
  • Ensure all resident evaluations are conducted on a timely basis.
  • Assesses the quality of care rendered.
  • Initiates the development of policies and procedures that govern nursing services and other services under his or her supervision.
  • Collaborates with other departments and agencies regarding resources and services for improved resident care and staff development.
  • Plans, develops, and implements a budget process for staffing and services rendered.
  • Evaluates the quality and cost-effectiveness of staffing and services within the goals of the community.
  • Serves as a spokesperson for nursing matters and represents the community with professional nursing and related organizations.
  • Participates in meetings and committees.
  • Encourages and supports research and improvement studies that can make meaningful contributions to the quality and economy of nursing services.
Requirements:

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Outstanding organizational skills.
  • Communication: Ability to effectively communicate with residents, families, and team members. Forms of communication include in-person, phone, email, and radio.
  • Knowledge of employee management. Effective management experience, including the ability to foster trust within your team, hold team members accountable, and provide constructive criticism as well as praise when necessary.
  • Knowledge of financial management.
  • Knowledge of the foundations of health laws.
  • Knowledge of statistics and research methodologies.

Education and Experience:

  • Registered Nurse with a current state license.
  • At least three years of supervisory experience in a nursing environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Prolonged periods of standing and moving.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times with or without assistance.
