Job Description
Blue Island Recycling, LLC is seeking an experienced Industrial Welder/Mechanic to join our second shift maintenance team. This hands on industrial role is primarily responsible for welding, fabrication, maintenance, and repair of our large industrial hammer mill and automobile shredder.
The Industrial Welder/Mechanic will perform heavy welding and fabrication repairs, complete mechanical and hydraulic repairs, troubleshoot equipment problems, and respond to breakdowns. Fluency in spoken Spanish is required because this position communicates directly during maintenance, repair, and safety-related work with a coworker who speaks Spanish and does not speak English. English and Spanish bilingual ability is preferred.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform welding and fabrication repairs on the industrial hammer mill, automobile shredder, and related equipment
Weld, cut, grind, fabricate, reinforce, and repair heavy steel components
Inspect equipment for worn, cracked, damaged, or broken parts and complete necessary repairs
Perform mechanical and hydraulic repairs on heavy industrial processing equipment
Troubleshoot mechanical and hydraulic problems and respond to equipment breakdowns
Inspect, repair, and replace hydraulic hoses and other worn or damaged components
Remove and replace worn or damaged mechanical components
Perform routine equipment inspections and assist with preventive maintenance
Perform maintenance and repair work on conveyors and other material processing equipment
Assist with maintenance and repairs involving excavators, material handlers, wheel loaders, and other large mobile equipment as needed
Safely operate welding equipment, cutting torches, grinders, hand tools, power tools, and other maintenance equipment
Drain oil, fuel, coolant, and other fluids from large trucks and vehicles being prepared for processing as needed
Properly collect, contain, and handle drained vehicle fluids
Maintain a clean and organized work area
Follow all company safety procedures, including lockout and tagout requirements
Assist with other maintenance and repair work throughout the facility as needed
Perform other duties as assigned by management
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Professional welding and fabrication experience
Hands on experience maintaining or repairing heavy industrial processing equipment such as shredders, hammer mills, crushers, conveyors, or similar equipment
Hands on mechanical and hydraulic repair experience involving heavy industrial or large equipment
Ability to troubleshoot and complete mechanical repairs
Ability to safely use welding equipment, cutting torches, grinders, hand tools, and power tools
Fluency in spoken Spanish for direct communication with a Spanish-speaking coworker who does not speak English
Ability to communicate effectively and follow safety instructions
Ability to work safely around large industrial machinery and heavy equipment
Dependability and ability to reliably work the full scheduled shift
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Heavy fabrication, structural welding, or industrial welding experience
Direct experience maintaining or repairing a scrap metal hammer mill or automobile shredder
Experience with hydraulic systems, hoses, cylinders, pumps, valves, and related components
Experience in a scrap metal yard, steel mill, quarry, demolition, mining, aggregate, heavy construction, recycling, or similar heavy industrial environment
English and Spanish bilingual ability
Experience maintaining or repairing excavators, material handlers, wheel loaders, dozers, or similar large mobile equipment is a plus
RELEVANT EXPERIENCE
Candidates should have actual hands on welding, fabrication, mechanical, hydraulic, maintenance, or repair experience. Experience limited primarily to operating equipment does not meet the repair and maintenance requirements for this position.
Relevant experience may include work involving scrap metal shredders, hammer mills, crushers, conveyors, screening equipment, material processing equipment, heavy construction or demolition equipment, mining or aggregate equipment, recycling equipment, heavy trucks, industrial machinery, or other heavy steel fabrication and repair work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is located at an active scrap metal recycling and processing facility. Employees work around heavy machinery, large mobile equipment, trucks, industrial equipment, scrap metal, dirt, dust, grease, noise, and changing weather conditions.
This is a hands on position. Applicants must be comfortable getting dirty, working around scrap metal and heavy equipment, working outdoors when required, and performing physical work in an industrial environment.
SCHEDULE
Monday through Friday
2:00 PM to 2:00 AM
Weekends off
This is a full time second shift position. Applicants must be able to reliably work the entire scheduled shift.
