Job Summary:
Peckham’s paid Internship Program is designed to add practical, relevant experience to your field of study while welcoming you into our family by choice culture. As a Materials Intern – Hot Mix Asphalt Operations, you will:
• Assist with day-to-day hot mix asphalt plant operations, including exposure to plant startup and shutdown, production scheduling, material flow, and loadout operations under supervision.
• Learn the asphalt production process from raw material storage and handling through mixing and finished product loadout, including aggregates, liquid asphalt, recycled asphalt pavement (RAP), and other mix components.
• Gain hands-on exposure to asphalt plant controls and production systems, including monitoring operating conditions, production rates, temperatures, material usage, and other key plant performance indicators.
• Support plant maintenance activities by assisting with preventative maintenance, equipment inspections, troubleshooting, general repairs, and plant cleanup to improve reliability and availability.
• Participate in quality control processes, including asphalt and aggregate sampling, testing procedures, mix specifications, and documentation to support consistent product quality.
• Assist with aggregate and RAP inventory management, stockpile organization, material handling, and coordination of materials needed to support asphalt production.
• Gain exposure to scale house and loadout operations, including truck coordination, ticketing, customer interaction, and communication between plant personnel, drivers, and paving operations.
• Learn how production schedules are coordinated with customer and construction needs while considering plant capacity, material availability, quality requirements, and operational efficiency.
• Support administrative functions including production reporting, purchase orders, work orders, requisitions, inventory records, and other plant documentation.
• Gain exposure to environmental and regulatory requirements associated with asphalt plant operations and assist with applicable inspections, documentation, and good housekeeping practices.
• Participate in leadership development activities, including project management, team collaboration, meeting participation, continuous improvement initiatives, and presentations to plant or divisional leadership.
• Follow all safety, environmental, and company policies while working around asphalt production equipment, mobile equipment, trucks, and other plant operations.
Majors applicable to this internship opportunity include Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Business Management, Business Administration, and other related engineering or technical majors.

Requirements, Education and Experience:
1. Excellent Attendance and Punctuality.
2. Strict adherence to all safety protocol, OSHA safety rules and regulation required.
3. Current enrollment at an accredited college or university with a 3.0 or higher GPA

5. Proficient written and verbal English communication skills

Please note: The program is scheduled to run for approximately nine weeks, Monday, June 7, 2027, through Friday, August 6, 2027, but can be flexible to the student’s needs.

Travel:
Position will require some travel by personal vehicle to offices throughout the state of New York, and New England based on the needs of the business.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
Work environment is dependent upon internship placement and may operate in a professional office or physical work environment. The professional work environment is mostly sedentary, outside of travel.
This internship may involve heavy work that includes heavy lifting, working near moving mechanical parts and loud equipment, the ability to sit or stand for long periods of time as well as lifting, pulling, bending, kneeling, squatting, climbing, walking, reaching, driving, and repetitive motion.
