Job Description
Med-Ophthalmology - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (26003132)
The University of Pittsburgh is looking for a Post Doctoral Fellow in the lab of Dr. Susana da Silva in the Department of Ophthalmology. The research will focus on 3D cell culture and microenvironment engineer of hiPSCs-derived human 3D retinal organoids for studies of molecular patterning mechanisms underlying retina/fovea development and disease, using state of the art stem cell technology, imaging and transcriptomic analyses.
• Duties or Responsibilities
Design and independently lead experimental strategies related to hiPSC culture and differentiation, ensuring rigorous experimental design, timely progress, and high-quality data generation.
Engineer and develop bioengineering approaches using hydrogels and extracellular matrix (ECM) materials to optimize 3D retinal organoid culture in a controlled environment, including strategies to establish gradients of proteins and particles.
Design and execute molecular, cellular, and advanced 3D imaging experiments across multiple microscopy platforms, performing in-depth data analysis and interpretation to generate mechanistic insights into fovea development and support high-impact publications. Demonstrate proficiency in analyzing bulk and single-cell RNA-seq datasets and generating publication-quality visualizations.
Foster a collaborative and productive research environment, contributing to the development of trainees and enhancing overall lab output and visibility.
Lead manuscript preparation and contribute to grant writing, producing high-quality first-author publications and supporting competitive funding applications that strengthen the lab's scientific impact.
• Expectations or Qualifications
PhD in Bioengineering with demonstrated experience in hiPSC culture and differentiation into retinal organoids. Strong knowledge of retinal and visual system anatomy. Extensive experience in molecular and histological techniques, including RNA extraction, RNA-seq analysis, immunohistochemistry, and confocal imaging. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present research at leading scientific conferences. Proven ability to design, organize, and coordinate complex experimental plans.
• Opportunities Available
Travel fund available for 1 national seminar.
