Job Description
Position Summary
The Field Service Technician is responsible for performing diagnostics, maintenance, inspections, and repairs on fire apparatus and heavy vehicles at customer locations. This position serves as a frontline representative of Safe Industries, delivering responsive, high-quality service directly to customers in the field while supporting emergency response readiness. This role requires a self-motivated technician who can work independently, manage scheduling priorities, communicate effectively with customers, and respond to emergency service needs during nights and weekends. The Field Service Technician is assigned a company take-home service vehicle and is trusted with company equipment, tools, fuel cards, and purchasing responsibilities necessary to support field operations.
Schedule 4-day Work Week, Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday (depending on area needs). Start time is flexible based on customer needs. Travel required most shifts.
Essential Functions and Core Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Perform diagnostics, maintenance, inspections, and repairs on fire apparatus and heavy trucks
Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and multiplex systems
Perform preventative maintenance services and safety inspections
Repair and replace components including brakes, suspension, steering, driveline, electrical, HVAC, and hydraulic systems
Utilize diagnostic software, OEM service information, and testing equipment to identify and resolve issues
Perform emergency roadside and after-hours service repairs when needed
Accurately document complaint, cause, and correction information on work orders
Properly clock into labor operations and record time accurately
Maintain clear and complete repair documentation for service records and warranty claims
Communicate additional repair needs or concerns to shop leadership
Communicate directly with customers regarding repairs, findings, scheduling, and service recommendations
Schedule and coordinate field service appointments and repair priorities
Maintain professional relationships with customers and represent Safe Industries positively at all times
Ensure customers are informed of repair status, delays, and additional service needs
Maintain assigned take-home service vehicle, tools, and equipment in clean and operational condition
Source and acquire parts needed to complete field repairs
Track and maintain field inventory, consumables, and service supplies
Participate in scheduled on-call rotation for nights, weekends, and emergency service needs
Respond to urgent customer requests and emergency breakdown situations
Maintain readiness to travel and support emergency response operations when required
Safely operate company vehicles requiring a valid Commercial Driver’s License in compliance with applicable laws, safety requirements, and company vehicle-use policies; driving and maintenance of required driving credentials are essential functions of the role.
Required Qualifications
Minimum 3 years of experience in heavy truck, diesel, automotive, or commercial vehicle repair. Experience with hydraulics, pneumatics and water pump preferred. • Strong mechanical and electrical diagnostic skills
Ability to work independently and manage repair tasks effectively
Experience using diagnostic software, hand tools, and shop equipment
Basic computer skills and ability to complete digital work orders • Strong problem-solving skills
Valid Commercial Driver’s License required, with the ability to maintain applicable endorsements, medical certification, acceptable driving record, and Company driving authorization.
Preferred Education, Certifications, and/or Experience:
Experience working on emergency response vehicles, fire apparatus, or specialty equipment
OEM, EVT, ASE, or related technical certifications
Experience with hydraulic, multiplex, or advanced electrical systems

This role requires physical activity necessary to inspect, diagnose, repair, and service equipment, which may include standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, using tools, and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling materials consistent with operational needs. Ability to lift or move materials and equipment up to 30 pounds independently and more with appropriate assistance or equipment.
