This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a C++/C Software Developer (Independent Contractor) based in Canada.

This is a remote, fixed-term contract opportunity focused on modernizing a mission-critical telecommunications call-handling platform.
You’ll work hands-on with C++ and Linux systems, helping migrate legacy 32-bit subsystems to a modern 64-bit architecture.
A key part of the role involves supporting the transition from CentOS 7 to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 through scripting and automation.
You’ll contribute across development, testing, security, CI/CD, and release activities as part of an established engineering team.
The role offers significant technical ownership and autonomy, with a defined modernization roadmap and clear delivery objectives.
You’ll collaborate closely with experienced engineers while applying strong technical judgment to complex systems and infrastructure challenges.
This engagement is designed for an independent contractor who can contribute quickly and help accelerate platform modernization through Q1 2027.

Accountabilities:
  • Migrate 32-bit C++ call-handling subsystems to a 64-bit architecture, addressing compatibility and modernization requirements.
  • Develop scripts, automation, and migration techniques to support the transition of operating systems from CentOS 7 to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.
  • Contribute to the modernization of Java-based web configurators and related platform components.
  • Participate in system testing, validation, deployment, and release activities throughout the migration lifecycle.
  • Update and adapt CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tooling to support the modernization program.
  • Perform security testing, identify vulnerabilities or gaps, and implement appropriate remediation measures.
  • Work independently against an established migration plan while maintaining close collaboration with the existing engineering team.
  • Apply sound technical judgment to troubleshoot complex Linux, networking, virtualization, security, and application issues.
  • Communicate progress, technical findings, risks, and solutions clearly with technical stakeholders and team members.
Requirements
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience developing C++ applications on Linux platforms.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with Linux operating systems and Bash scripting.
  • Strong understanding of networking, virtualization, and security concepts and practices.
  • Hands-on experience working with complex software systems and the ability to understand and modernize existing codebases.
  • Strong technical problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and make sound engineering decisions.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with an established engineering team.
  • Ability to work as an independent contractor in Canada, including being legally authorized to work without employer sponsorship.
  • Ability to contract directly with a Canadian entity as a corporation or sole proprietor.
  • Experience with multi-threaded, high-availability, or real-time systems is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience with Linux operating system migrations is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with Python, Java, or C# is considered a plus.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD and DevOps toolchains such as TeamCity, Perforce, Jenkins, or GitHub is advantageous.
  • Exposure to telecommunications and voice infrastructure, including SIP, PBX, or PSTN, is a plus.
  • Experience applying agentic AI techniques to software engineering is also considered an advantage.
Benefits
  • Remote engagement: Work remotely from Canada as an independent contractor.
  • Fixed-term contract: Engagement through the end of Q1 2027.
  • Technical ownership: Take a hands-on role in a significant platform modernization initiative.
  • Autonomy: Work against a defined migration roadmap while contributing independently and making technical decisions.
  • Collaborative environment: Partner closely with an established and experienced engineering team.
  • Mission-critical technology: Work on telecommunications infrastructure where reliability, security, and modernization have a direct operational impact.
  • Broad technical exposure: Contribute across C++, Linux, operating system migration, DevOps, CI/CD, security, testing, and release engineering.
  • Modernization experience: Gain practical experience transforming legacy systems toward contemporary architectures and platforms.
