Job Description

Description: Position Summary

The Sustaining Design Engineer provides hands-on mechanical design and documentation support for released products, new product development, product improvements, and product corrections. The position uses SolidWorks to create and maintain accurate 3D models, assemblies, drawings, and bills of material, and carries design work through the company’s engineering change and product development processes.

PRIMARY FOCUS: Translate product needs and approved changes into clear, production-ready SolidWorks models, drawings, BOMs, and supporting engineering records.

What You Will Do

· Create, revise, and maintain SolidWorks parts, assemblies, configurations, and production drawings for current and new products.

· Convert approved concepts, product corrections, and improvement requests into complete design outputs, including drawings, specifications, and bills of material (BOMs).

· Support Engineering Change Requests and Engineering Change Orders by reviewing the need, identifying affected products and documents, preparing design changes, and providing implementation-ready documentation.

· Provide design support for new product development from concept and prototype work through verification, production release, and design transfer.

· Investigate product, manufacturing, supplier, service, warranty, and customer issues; develop practical design corrections or improvements with appropriate cross-functional input.

· Apply design for manufacturability and assembly principles, appropriate tolerances, materials, finishes, and drawing practices to product designs.

· Build or coordinate prototypes and first articles, support fit and function evaluations, and document results.

· Prepare or support engineering calculations, test plans, test procedures, test execution, data review, and technical reports when required by the change or development plan.

· Maintain accurate revision control and supporting records in the approved document, CAD/PDM, and ERP systems.

· Collaborate with Quality, Manufacturing, Operations, Purchasing, Sales, Service, suppliers, and other stakeholders to ensure design requirements are understood and implemented.

· Participate in design reviews and independent drawing checks; resolve identified issues before release.

· Provide timely technical support to manufacturing while protecting approved product requirements and change controls.

Typical Work

· Correcting a released drawing or model after a production or field issue is confirmed.

· Improving an existing component for performance, reliability, manufacturability, cost, or part commonality.

· Creating models, assemblies, drawings, and BOMs for a new product or product option.

· Updating affected design documentation and supporting evidence through the engineering change process.

· Working with production and suppliers to confirm that the updated design can be built and inspected as intended.

Requirements: Required Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, engineering technology, product design, or a related field; equivalent relevant design experience may be considered.

· Practical experience creating and revising 3D models, assemblies, and detailed manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD software.

· Ability to read and create technical drawings and apply dimensions, tolerances, materials, finishes, and revision controls.

· Experience working with manufactured products and collaborating with production or operations teams.

· Ability to organize multiple assignments, communicate clearly, and produce accurate technical documentation.

· Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications

· Experience with medical devices or another regulated manufacturing industry (ISO, FDA, etc.).

· Experience with engineering change control, design controls, document control, CAD/PDM systems, and ERP bills of material.

· Knowledge of design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA), geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), tolerance analysis, and common fabrication or assembly processes.

· Experience supporting prototypes, first articles, verification/validation testing, root-cause investigations, or corrective actions.

· SolidWorks certification, such as CSWA or higher.

· Experience with designing for sheet metal, stainless steel products, and/or metal fabrication desired.

Core Skills and Work Style

· Strong SolidWorks modeling and drawing discipline.

· Attention to detail and commitment to accurate, controlled design documentation.

· Practical problem solving and sound engineering judgment.

· Clear written and verbal communication.

· Collaboration across engineering, quality, manufacturing, supply chain, commercial, and service functions.

· Ability to balance urgent production support with planned product development and improvement work.
