Equinox is Albany County’s primary provider of services for victims of domestic violence. Our Domestic Violence Programs provide safety for victims of Domestic Violence, including the elderly, and offer the support, assistance and tools they need to escape abusive situations and take control of their lives. Domestic Violence Services are available to all victims and their dependent children, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.
Position Summary: The DV Educator works to provide prevention and education to youth, adults, service providers, agencies, and schools. The DV Educator will coordinate and conduct community education, prevention and awareness to increase community awareness. The DV Educator will work with DV department program managers to ensure staff and community trainings are up to date and aligned with current best practices and are based in trauma-informed service provision. The DV Educator will attend events to bring awareness and information about services to those in attendance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides educational presentations to community agencies, organization’s, schools and other groups as needed
- Provide prevention programming to athletes and youth
- Attends events to disperse program information and domestic violence education materials as needed
- Assist, develop and maintain positive working relationships with community service agencies.
- Coordinate, develop, and present community education program
- Collaborate with DV department managers to ensure staff and community trainings are up to date and aligned with current best practices and are based in trauma-informed service provision.
- Connects clients to all other Equinox, Inc. services and appropriate community services as needed.
- Develop and coordinate outreach strategies to increase community awareness of domestic violence and Equinox Domestic Violence Services, including local and regional involvement in national awareness activities, E.g. DV Awareness Month
- Maintains accurate case records; completes necessary paperwork and statistic requirements for the agency and funding sources.
- Answers the 24-hour hotline, providing telephone counseling, information and referral, conducting shelter intakes, safety planning, and scheduling counseling appointments.
- Utilize, model and encourages a trauma informed, strengths based, asset development approach with clients throughout the program.
- May represent the agency in formal and informed groups related to domestic violence services
- Participate in staff meetings, as well as individual supervision meetings.
- Participate in agency committees, events and forums as needed.
- Reports suspected incidents of child abuse, as required by law as a mandated reporter.
- Acts in accordance with Equinox and Domestic Violence Services Program mission.
- Performs other duties as requested for the enhancement and continuation of programming.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to negotiate stairs.
- Ability to lift and carry minimum of 15 lbs.
- Ability to handle basic facility emergencies.
- Ability to drive and transport clients at times with agency vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of four years’ experience in human services.
- Must have a clean, valid NYS Driver License, with access to reliable transportation as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associates’ Degree in a human service or educational-related field preferred with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in human services/education OR a Bachelor’s Degree in a human service or educational -related field preferred with a minimum of one year experience in human services/education
- Fluency in Spanish and/or an additional language.
- Public speaking, presentation and outreach skills
- Ability to write clean and professionally, speak diplomatically clearly and concisely
