Woodland - Class A Driver, Local, Flat Bed Truck

SUMMARY:

Promotes and enhances Gerlinger Steel's mission to be the best resource for a very diverse group of customers. Drives gasoline or diesel-powered tractor-trailer combination and other company vehicles to the warehouse to load materials in loose or packaged form and then delivers them to customers or other company facilities.

This is a Monday to Friday position, shifts begin at 6 am and run until the route is finished. Drivers are paid by the hour, not by the stop and overtime is paid after 8 hours in a day and 40 hours a week.

Routes are local only, intrastate and usually within a 100-mile radius. Trucks are Kenworth T800 or T800 day cabs with a 40 - 42-foot flatbed trailer. This is flat-bed hauling only and flatbed experience is preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Reads customer order, work order, shipping order, or requisition to determine items to be moved, gathered, or distributed.
  • Measures or count items for distribution within plant to ensure conformance to company standards.
  • Compare delivery paperwork to load to check accuracy.
  • Drives company vehicle to the loading area.
  • Load and unload vehicles using a forklift truck, overhead crane, or by hand.
  • Ensures company vehicles are properly and legally loaded and that load is securely tied down using the correct and protected securing devices before moving.
  • Tarps load when necessary
  • Ensures that trucks are kept in a safe and clean condition at all times and that all required safety devices are installed.
  • Drives truck to destination.
  • Inspects truck for defects before and after trips and submits a report indicating truck condition.
  • Inspect truck equipment and supplies such as tires, lights, brakes, fuel, oil, and water.
  • Maintain driver's log according to I.C. regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as maps, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Be able to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtracts, multiply, and divides into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Able to use a tape measure and calipers.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Have the ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES

Good interpersonal skills. Maintains good grooming standards as outlined in the company personnel policy.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must have valid Class A Commercial California driver's license and provide current DMV printout.

Must have a clean driving record with no more than 1.5 points.

Must have no legal restrictions regarding delivering to schools, prisons, or other potential customers.

Must be able to read maps, follow and program GPS unit, and understand verbal directions.

Mechanical aptitude is desirable.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
