Data-Smart City Solutions, founded in 2012 and now housed within the Bloomberg Center for Cities at Harvard University, works to catalyze the adoption of data-informed practices in local government. The program highlights best practices, surface emerging trends, connects public sector leaders with innovators across sectors, and supports cities in using data, technology, and innovation to improve quality of life for residents.


Job Description

Data-Smart City Solutions seeks an innovative and detail-oriented Digital Communications and Marketing Coordinator to drive our digital engagement and broaden our audience across channels. This pivotal role will lead content creation for our newsletters, social media, website, and podcasts; manage and analyze the performance of these platforms; and implement strategies to grow and engage our audience of public-sector leaders, practitioners, and civic-minded readers and listeners.

The ideal candidate is a creative storyteller with strong analytical skills, adept at leveraging data and digital tools to enhance visibility and foster community. You are as comfortable drafting compelling content as you are tracking campaign metrics, identifying trends, and recommending data-driven strategies for continuous growth.

Digital Content Creation and Engagement

  • Develop, produce, and edit engaging multi-media content for newsletters and social media posts, to drive engagement with our podcasts and written articles.
  • Collaborate with team members to highlight Data-Smart research, events, and news using a variety of digital storytelling tools (written copy, video, graphics, audio).
  • Manage recurring newsletters; manage mailing lists, segment audiences, and strategize newsletter growth and engagement.
  • Serve as primary social media manager, developing and executing channel-specific content strategies (Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Bluesky).
  • Ensure cohesive and compelling messaging across all digital touchpoints.
  • Assists with editorial and campaign calendars for newsletters, social media, and promotional initiatives.

Audience Growth and Community Management

  • Monitor, increase, and nurture audience engagement across channels, responding to community feedback and interactions.
  • Develop strategies to reach new audiences and deepen engagement with existing readers, listeners, and stakeholders.

Marketing Analytics and Reporting

  • Utilize platforms such as Google Analytics, Salesforce, and native analytics tools on social and email platforms to track performance metrics (traffic, engagement, open/click rates, conversions, etc.).
  • Analyze data and KPIs to assess the effectiveness of campaigns and content and generate actionable insights to optimize future efforts.
  • Prepare regular performance reports for internal stakeholders.

Other Responsibilities

  • Maintain and update web content using Drupal or similar CMS.
  • Design and produce graphics and visuals.
  • Support event promotions and multimedia needs (photography, video, audio clips) as needed.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: Bachelors degree and at least 3 years of relevant experience in communications, marketing, journalism, or related field.


Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience managing social media channels, newsletters, and web content.
  • Strong writing, editing, and visual storytelling skills.
  • Experience with analytics tools (Google Analytics and social/email analytics dashboards).
  • Proficiency with the Adobe Suite, Canva, or similar graphic design tools.
  • Experience with content management systems (Salesforce preferred) Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Basic video production or editing skills.
  • Communications or marketing experience in a public sector, research, or higher-education setting.

Additional Information
  • Appointment End Date: This is a fully benefits eligible term appointment ending one year from date of hire, with the strong possibility of renewal.
  • Standard Hours/Schedule: 35 hours per week

    • This is a full-time, on-campus position based in Cambridge, MA. Flexible remote work arrangements may be available with supervisory approval.

This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that all duties and responsibilities must be performed at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location. Certain visa types may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
