What You Will Be Doing
The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in overseeing the organization’s accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls. This role is responsible for managing day-to-day accounting functions, supervising staff, and ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with U.S. GAAP. The position plays a key role in the month-end close, audit coordination, and process improvement initiatives, particularly within a construction and real estate environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise month-end and year-end close processes including review of work and reports.
- Manage the team of Staff Accountants in their daily assignments.
- Prepare and review consolidated monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.
- Knowledge of US GAAP and other financial standards and requirements.
- Coordinate the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts, variance reports, and financial dashboards.
- Maintain integrity of the general ledger and ensure all reconciliations are completed and reviewed.
- Prepare regulatory reporting including annual and periodic review audits.
- Manage and comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
- Research and resolve technical accounting issues in collaboration with the Controller.
- Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
- Oversee tax compliance, including coordination of federal, state, and local filings.
- Assist management of all accounting operations.
- Inspire, motivate and capture team commitment and help team members create a pathway consisting of accountability and performance to ensure collective long-term success and growth.
- Develop a strong discipline of role clarity and hold self and team members accountable for performance.
- Act as a primary liaison for auditors in the Controller’s absence.
- Delegate work effectively while maintaining accountability for deliverables.
- Provide financial guidance to non-finance stakeholders, particularly in construction/project accounting contexts.
- Partner with operations and project teams to align financial processes with business objectives
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, preferred CPA or CMA certification.
- 5+ years of overall combined accounting and finance experience, preferably in a public company environment with a construction or real estate background.
- Proven experience in a supervisory, leadership or senior role.
- Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures.
- Experience with financial statement preparation and financial analysis and reporting for all types of legal entities.
- Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process and consolidations.
- Regulatory compliance and risk management experience.
- Experience in preparing and reviewing partnerships, corporate, payroll, and tax filings.
- Experience with various accounting software administrations.
- Strong knowledge of the following software/tools: Word, Outlook, Excel, Pivot Tables, Sage 100 and QuickBooks.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
