DPW Summer Seasonal Maintenance Worker

General Statement of Duties

Performs unskilled and semi-skilled manual work requiring extensive muscular exertion and involving the use of power and hand tools, and the operation of some automotive equipment, under the supervision of a Foreman.

Position Title: Maintenance Worker

Essential Job Functions: (Any one position may not include all duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.)

• Patches streets, installs and cleans catch basins, manholes and sewer lines; trims trees, cuts grass, brush, shrubs and wood; removes debris litter and debris; tends lawns, trees, shrubs and plants.
• Participates in such varied activities as repairing streets, installing meter posts, masonry work, constructing parking lots, erecting street sign posts, changing traffic light bulbs, painting facilities and street markings,building maintenance, minor repair and maintenance of furnishings and equipment, janitorial work, cement work, painting, assisting craftsmen, and preparing, repairing and maintaining disposal facilities and recreational facilities.
• Operates a variety of equipment such as trucks, sweeper, leaf blower, chipper, sanitary pump, pavement breaker, front end loader, air compressor, sewer roder, lawn mower and roller; may make minor equipment adjustments and repairs.
• Performs related duties as required.

Required Background, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of and ability to use tools and equipment employed in semi-skilled work.
• Knowledge of safe working practices.
• Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; ability to lift, carry, push or pull, property or equipment, appliances or tools weighing up 100 pounds; ability to perform tasks requiring hand dexterity and employment of senses of vision or hearing.
• Ability to work in awkward positions and in disagreeable environments, and to tolerate loud noises from equipment.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to do simple math.
• Ability to assist and to communicate with, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and members of the public.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position.
