Job Description

Description:

Let’s Do great things—Together

At Shive-Hattery, we believe great design starts with great people. We’re a full-service architecture and engineering firm with a legacy of collaboration, innovation, and putting people first, our clients and each other. If you’re looking for a place where your ideas matter and your growth is supported, you’ll feel at home here.

Why This Role Matters

As a Lighting Designer with 0-3 years of experience, you’ll play a key role in supporting the firm and shaping projects that make a difference—from concept through completion. You’ll collaborate with talented teammates, contribute your expertise, and help us deliver thoughtful, high-quality solutions for those we serve. This opportunity is a Full-Time HOURLY position.

What You’ll Do

Work alongside senior lighting design professional and multidisciplinary project teams throughout the lighting design process, including:

  • Develop architectural lighting concepts and assist with the preparation of lighting plans, layouts, sections, details, schedules, and other design documentation.
  • Use AGi32 and Visual Lighting software to model interior and exterior spaces, evaluate illumination levels, and verify compliance with project criteria and applicable standards.
  • Research and evaluate luminaires, light sources, drivers, controls, mounting methods, and accessories. Assist with fixture selections, cut sheets, schedules, and lighting specification packages.
  • Assist with the development and documentation of lighting control zones, dimming strategies, daylighting, occupancy-based controls, and integration with building systems.
  • Support lighting designs in accordance with applicable energy and building codes, local outdoor lighting requirements, LEED requirements, and Illuminating Engineering Society guidance. Review of technical design requirements and adherence to them throughout design.
  • Coordinate lighting solutions with architects, interior designers, electrical engineers, Revit designers, manufacturers, and other project team members to integrate lighting with the architectural design and technical requirements of the project.
  • Assist with Revit modeling and other visualization methods used to study fixture placement, architectural integration, and the effect of light within a space.
  • Participate in site surveys, construction observations, fixture verification, submittal reviews, punch lists, lighting adjustments, and fixture aiming during construction and project completion.
  • Assist senior lighting designers and electrical engineers with lighting-related design coordination and documentation across a variety of project types.
Requirements:

You don’t need to meet every qualification to be successful in this role. If you have relevant experience, a passion for design, and a willingness to learn, we encourage you to apply.

What You’ll Bring

  • A bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architecture, Interior Design, Fine Arts, or a related design-focused field.
  • Coursework, internship, or professional experience in architectural lighting design, fixture selection, photometric calculations, architectural aesthetics, or lighting technology.
  • Experience with lighting design software (e.g., AGi32 or Visual Lighting) and 3D modeling is preferred. Revit experience is a plus, along with a willingness to develop skills in lighting documentation, coordination, and visualization.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Effective time management, organization, prioritization, and attention to detail.
  • Curiosity, creativity, and an eagerness to learn new lighting technologies, design methods, and software.

What Will Make You Stand Out

You see lighting as both an artistic element of architecture and a functional building system. You understand how thoughtful lighting can:

  • Complement and enhance architectural design.
  • Balance aesthetics, functionality, energy efficiency, and visual comfort.
  • Highlight architectural forms, materials, artwork, and other features.
  • Shape the mood, character, and overall experience of a space.
  • Make the luminaire itself an architectural feature or focal point when appropriate.
  • Provide effective, comfortable light levels while supporting the overall design intent.

Our Commitment to You

That’s why our benefits support your health, financial stability, and life beyond work — including medical, dental and vision coverage, paid time off and holidays, 401(k) retirement savings, disability protection, wellness incentives, and flexibility.
