Quality Control Lead
Position Overview
The Engineering & Quality Control Technician is responsible for aligning ABH Manufacturing's engineering drawings with the door hardware parts currently in production at the Itasca, IL location. This role measures production parts, determines which features are critical to fit and function, applies GD&T and tolerances the process can repeatably hold, and releases corrected drawings through engineering change control. The Engineering & Quality Control Technician also supports the Quality Control team by building inspection plans for released drawings, leading root cause analysis on drawing-related nonconformances, and training inspectors on GD&T. The role reports to the Supply Chain Lead and works closely with Engineering, Quality Control, Production, and Purchasing.
Main Responsibilities
• Measure production parts across multiple lots, vendors, and tooling using CMM / vision systems and hand gauges, and document every discrepancy against the current drawing.
• Identify functional and critical-to-quality features, establish datum schemes, and set GD&T and tolerances based on process capability and functional need.
• Update drawings and models in CAD to company drafting standards, and manage the drawing realignment backlog by priority: high-volume and problem parts, then RFQ and new-vendor parts, then low-volume parts.
• Prepare ECNs backed by measurement data, route changes to critical or functional features for review by the Supply Chain Lead and Engineering Lead, and coordinate revision rollout with Quality Control, Purchasing, and Inventory.
• Build or update inspection plans and first-article requirements as each realigned drawing is released.
• Participate in Material Review Board (MRB) meetings and lead root cause analysis on NCRs tied to drawing or specification issues.
• Train Quality Control inspectors on GD&T and on reading revised drawings, and support gauge, CMM, and vision system programs.
• Provide corrected drawing packages for vendor quotes, first-article inspection, and new-vendor onboarding, and report weekly progress to the Supply Chain Lead.
Skills
• Strong GD&T to ASME Y14.5 (datums, position, profile, flatness, perpendicularity), with the judgment to apply it, not just read it.
• Proficient in 3D CAD and 2D drawing creation (SolidWorks, Inventor, or equivalent); AutoCAD for legacy drawings.
• Hands-on measurement with CMM or vision measuring systems, height gauges, calipers, micrometers, and pin and thread gauges.
• Basic tolerance stack-up analysis and an understanding of process capability.
• Sound judgment on when to decide and when to escalate; every change backed by measurement data.
• Clear communication with Production, Quality Control, Purchasing, and vendors; organized and steady through a long backlog.
Experience
• 3+ years as a quality, engineering, design, or drafting technician in metal fabrication, manufacturing, stamping, machining, extrusion, or hardware assembly.
• Reverse engineering or as-built documentation of existing products.
• Engineering change (ECN) and revision control experience, working to drafting standards.
• Associate degree in mechanical engineering technology, drafting, or design, or equivalent experience.
• Preferred: ASME GDTP certification; ASQ CQT or CQI (or willingness to earn within 18 months); ISO 9001 exposure.
• Preferred: door hardware or architectural products experience (hinges, closers, exit devices, locksets, flat goods) and familiarity with ANSI/BHMA standards.
