About This Position
Statement of Purpose:
Responsible for assisting providers with patient care, clerical, and organizational tasks. Responsible for timely patient flow throughout provider encounter. Conveys a positive image of the practice.
MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned which may include:
- May assist in front end functions such as checking in and checking out.
- Accompanying patients to exam/procedure room; assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collection of specimens, preparing for exam, etc.
- Collecting patient history; performing screening per provider guidelines, such as vital signs, or EKG.
- Chaperoning patients.
- Charting within electronic medical record system.
- Prepares prescriptions for transmission to pharmacies via telephone, fax, or electronic prescribing.
- Relaying instructions to patient/families.
- Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include:
- Obtaining diagnostic tests and screening reports, hospital notes, etc.
- Completing forms/requisitions as needed.
- Completing role tasks assigned in medical records system.
- Completing lab requisitions, including proper labeling and storage of specimens.
- Mails normal result letters to patients as directed by providers, follow up on patient reminders.
- Answers/places calls to patients regarding recalls in a friendly and professional manner. Ensures that emergency or urgent calls are handed over to a nurse as per practice policy; assist with registering patients, verifying insurances, making pre-visit reminder calls to scheduled patients.
- Cleans exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits, maintaining accurate equipment calibration records and infection control records.
- Orders, stores, and stocks supplies as needed.
- Assists with obtaining prior authorization for medications, referrals, diagnostic studies, and procedures as indicated from insurance companies.
- Assists as directed with emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in patients such as cardiac arrest.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills in customer service, medical terminology, EMR systems, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

- May assist in the promotion of our institution and profession by participation in hospital promotion and health fair activities.
- Performs other duties as requested within the scope of applicable licensure, abilities and policies.
- When Staffing needs dictate, may work an alternate shift or be scheduled to work on an on-call basis. Employees scheduled on call must report within 30 minutes of receiving a call.
- If applicable, demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to all ages of patients as documented by training and competency assessment.
EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalency, plus recommended completion of an accredited program for Medical Assistant. Certification in Medical Assisting (CMA or RMA) required within one year of hire. Current BLS certification.
EXPERIENCE: Medical office experience preferred. Must have good computer/keyboarding skills.
CONTACTS: Frequent contact with patients, family members, physicians, and other employees.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Stands and walks most of the day.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Normal. Frequent exposure to disagreeable odors, cuts, burns, infections, communicable diseases, strains and injuries from patients and equipment
