About This Position
Sequim High School is seeking a Head Boys Soccer Coach to lead and develop a competitive, student-centered interscholastic soccer program. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, effective communication, and a commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive team culture aligned with district values.
This position operates in compliance with Sequim School District policy, Olympic League standards, and Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) rules and regulations.

BASIC FUNCTION:
To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategies, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the student shall receive instruction that will lead to formulation of strong character, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline and self confidence. The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community’s image of the school. The community/parent pressure to winning performance is taxing, however it must not over-ride the objectives of good sportsmanship, good mental health and safety. The position includes other unusual aspects such as extended time, risk injury factor, and due process predicament. Although this job description is intended to give guidance, the expectation is that a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment at all times.
Minimum Criteria/Qualifications
- Experience coaching soccer at high school or comparable level
- Knowledge of WIAA rules and Olympic League standards (or willingness to learn)
- Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively within a school athletic department
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and positive youth development
Required Certifications (prior to season start)
- WIAA and Sequim Required training
- Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification
- Completion of all district-required trainings and background checks
Representative Duties:
Organization and Communication:
- Send information/correspondence to players, parents, and school personnel
- Conduct orientation programs for parents, athletes, and assistant coaches
- Work with Athletic Director and/or other coaches to develop non-league schedule and confirm league schedule
- Develop procedures and establish open communication with parents and athletes to address any issues or concerns related to the team
- Establish partnerships with local businesses and community
- Develop positive working relationships with media
- Provide input on budget priorities and equipment needs as well as support for fundraisers
Administrative:
- Provide leadership and oversight of the entire boys’ soccer program (varsity and sub-varsity)
- Promote student-athlete development, sportsmanship, and academic accountability
- Plan and conduct practices and competitions that emphasize safety, skill development, and teamwork
- Ensure program compliance with Sequim School District, Olympic League and WIAA rules
- Communicate effectively with athletes, families, staff, and administration
- Supervise assistant coaches and collaborate with athletic department staff
- Maintain accurate records, equipment inventory, and required certifications
- Uphold district expectations related to conduct, supervision, and student welfare
- Work in conjunction with Athletic Director on preparation of budget for the sport being coached
- Manage the ordering, inventory, repairing and cleaning of all sport specific equipment
- Establish a systematic method of distributing, collecting and inventorying equipment
- Work with Athletic Director to secure officials for non-league home games
- Work with Athletic Director in making arrangements for transportation to away games in accordance with school board policies
- Implement and follow all WIAA and school athletic codes, rules and philosophies
- Ensure completion of yearly physical exam and existence of insurance by and for each athlete
- Work with Athletic Director, Counselor and District Administration to confirm both residential and academic eligibility of each athlete
- Distribute team rosters, contest schedules, and contest locations to all players, parents/guardians and school personnel
- Work with Athletic Director to establish set practice times and locations
- Supervise and direct activities of all assistant coaches or volunteers
- Ensure quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written correspondence with the media
- Work with Athletic Director to determine and procure any team awards
Training and preparation of Athletes:
- Hold fair and equitable tryouts
- Provide all team rules and regulations to team members
- Provide training on all rules and skills of the specific sport
- Provide training on physical conditioning and injury prevention
- Institute, teach and monitor all drills
- Provide appropriate sport specific tactical training
- Provide positive motivation
- Discipline players as necessary in accordance with team, school, league, section and WIIA rules
- Select , direct, and monitor activities of any team managers
- Confer with medical personnel for proper approval prior to allowing any injured player to return to athletic activity.
