Healthcare Interior & Space Planning Specialist



Position Summary
The Healthcare Interior & Space Planning Specialist provides comprehensive project management, planning, and design services related to space use, interior environments, and the selection, coordination, and implementation of furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FFE). This role supports strategic space planning, interior design development, inventory and data analysis, space utilization, move coordination, FFE procurement and installation, and master planning initiatives across Kootenai Health.

Responsibilities
• Leads the communication, coordination, and execution of assigned projects related to space planning, interior design, and FFE
• Collaborates with organizational leadership to support strategic initiatives involving space allocation, move planning, and interior environment improvements
• Develops interior design concepts aligned with functional, regulatory, and healing-environment standards within healthcare settings
• Conducts space planning analysis and creates layouts that optimize workflow, patient experience, and staff efficiency
• Selects, specifies, and documents finishes, furnishings, fixtures, materials, and equipment, ensuring alignment with safety, infection control, durability, and cleanability requirements for healthcare facilities
• Leads FFE procurement processes, including vendor coordination, product evaluation, documentation, budget adherence, and installation oversight
• Partners with architects, engineers, designers, builders, and internal stakeholders to ensure design concepts and FFE packages are properly executed from planning through installation
• Organizes, processes, and tracks all space, design, and FFE management requests
• Supports project managers in the execution of capital initiatives using industry-standard project management methodologies (PMBOK)
• Applies best-practice healthcare design principles and maintains awareness of evidence-based design research to support patient and staff centered outcomes
• Maintains accurate and detailed space, inventory, and FFE records within organizational systems
• Performs other related duties as assigned
• Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
• Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function

• Competent to meet age-specific needs of the unit assigned

Requirements and Minimum Qualifications
• High School diploma or equivalent required
• Bachelors degree preferred
• CHID – Certified Healthcare Interior Designer (AAHID) certification preferred
• Minimum 3 years’ related experience required
• Strong understanding of FFE specification, procurement, installation coordination, lifecycle considerations and vendor evaluation
• Knowledge of interior design principles, material/finish selection, and healthcare specific durability, cleanability, and infection-prevention standards
• Strong organizational skills for tracking space requests, move coordination, FFE inventories, and documentation

Working Conditions
• Must be able to lift and move up to 35 lbs

• Must be able to reach arms above or below shoulder height
• Must be able to maintain a standing and/or sitting position

• Travel required on a regular basis to assigned work sites
