About This Position

Position Summary

The AHS Director of Risk Management has oversight and responsibility for all risk management functions for employed physician practices, the hospitals, and the population health departments. The director works closely with a variety of stakeholders, coordinating risk management activities across the Healthcare Delivery System and supports, promotes, and encourages a culture of safety throughout the organization. Additionally, the Director Risk Management coordinates with the AultCare Companies’ enterprise risk management supervisor.

Areas of Oversight Summary

The Risk Management Director is responsible for leading the health system’s risk management program to minimize organizational risk exposure and ensure patient safety, regulatory compliance, and financial stability. The Risk Management Director oversees risk identification, mitigation strategies and claims management within the health system.

The Director collaborates with executive leadership, clinical teams, legal counsel, compliance, and quality departments to proactively manage risk and foster a culture of safety and accountability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
    • Master’s degree in healthcare administration, nursing, or Juris Doctor (JD) preferred.
  • Certification Health Care Risk Management, or other relevant healthcare specialty preferred.
  • Minimum five years of healthcare leadership experience.

Responsibilities & Expectations

    • Partner with the System Chief Legal Officer on legal and risk matters.
    • Collaborate with Quality & Patient Safety on relevant initiatives.
    • Coordinate operational policies and procedures.
    • Maintain active membership in professional organizations and disseminate current standards and best practices.

Department Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Direct and support two risk managers in managing malpractice claims and lawsuits, including document retention, discovery, and coordination with outside counsel.
  • Oversee preparation and submission of insurance policy filings in coordination with risk managers, legal, and consultants.
  • Assist in establishing quarterly reserves for malpractice cases.
  • Supervise claims‑cost tracking.
  • Present risk mitigation education in clinical orientation and training sessions.
  • Collaborate with regulatory departments during accreditation and ODH/CMS visits.
  • Participate in the legal department’s on‑call rotation.
  • Organize and lead internal meetings with legal and risk colleagues.
  • Work with internal attorneys on risk issues.
  • Review daily incident reports and coordinate or lead investigations.

Working Conditions

Work eight hours a day. This unit requires 24/7 coverage.

Shifts are variable to volume of department. Rotation as needed.

Work weekends and holidays as assigned. Every other weekend and two holidays a year, in a group rotation

Hybrid/WFH schedule available

Lunch periods and breaks are coordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate floor coverage

Cross training in all areas in the department is required.

On call coverage is assigned to cover the department schedule

Staff may be assigned to different locations within the foundation

Travel within a “XX” mile radius is required

  • Standard schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with occasional off‑shift or weekend work.

Department Working Conditions

  • Shared on‑call rotation.
  • Frequent interruptions and shifting priorities.
  • Travel required between Aultman facilities and affiliated locations.
  • Travel by personal vehicle to Aultman Hospitals, Aultman Rehab, Employed Physician Offices and other locations as needed is required.
