About This Position
THIS POSITION IS PART-TIME (19 HOURS PER WEEK) AND WILL BE ASSIGNED TO THE LOMITA RAILROAD MUSEUM.
ABOUT THE POSITION
The Part-Time Recreation Leader – Museum is an entry-level, hands-on role supporting the City’s recreation programs and operations at the Lomita Railroad Museum. Working under close supervision, Recreation Leaders help run youth and adult activities, assist with camps and special events, and provide a welcoming experience for museum visitors.
This position is scheduled to work 19 hours or less per week and is ideal for students, first-time job seekers, or individuals interested in recreation, community programs, museums, or public service. On-the-job training is provided.

Key Responsibilities:
• Welcome visitors and provide information about exhibits, hours, and special events.
• Collect admissions and assist with gift shop sales.
• Support museum staff during daily operations and events.
• Provide customer service by answering questions in person and by phone, assisting with program registration, and accepting payments.
• Perform basic clerical tasks such as data entry, recordkeeping, preparing flyers, and maintaining participation logs.
• Assist with opening, closing, and monitoring City facilities; help maintain clean, safe, and organized program spaces.
• Follow City safety procedures and administer first aid or CPR when necessary.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

The formal job description is as follows:
Under close supervision, assists recreation staff in providing varied youth and adult recreation and sports programs, assists in supervising children during activities, assists at the Lomita Railroad Museum and special events; and performs related duties as required. This position is at-will and has limited benefits.
This is the entry-level classification in the part-time Recreation Leader series. Incumbents in this classification receive on-the-job training, specific day-to-day direction, and are closely supervised. Incumbents are expected to exercise routine judgment within established policies and procedures and refer more complex or difficult matters to supervisory personnel. Reports to assigned supervisory or management personnel, depending on assignment.

- Welcome visitors to the museum and collect admission.
- Provide information to the public regarding the museum's exhibitions, hours of operation, and special events.
- Facilitate gift shop sales.
- Provide other support for museum operations as needed.
- Assist with City special events as needed.
- Performs basic clerical and office support duties including registration assistance, recordkeeping, data entry, and preparing routine program materials.
- Assists with opening, closing, and maintaining recreation and museum facilities, including basic custodial duties and equipment monitoring.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and special events as required.
- Ability to become certified in CPR and first-aid within six months of employment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
- Ability to operate a cash register for museum purposes.
- Skill in providing excellent customer service and interacting with youth and adults.
- Ability to learn City policies and regulations regarding museum operations.
Experience/ Education/ Training
Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
No experience required, but some volunteer experience and/or participation in recreation activities is desirable. For minors currently enrolled in high school, a work permit is required.
Certificates/ Licenses/ Registrations
Must obtain CPR and first aid certification within six months of employment.
Other Qualifications
Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination and Live Scan background check.
Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with others. Ability to work independently and on project teams.
Physical Demands

Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, and bending, in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires frequent jogging, jumping, kicking, throwing, grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination when coaching and officiating sports activities. Incumbents are occasionally required to climb, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Incumbents must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Visual acuity required for this position includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to focus with or without the use of corrective lenses. Position requires the ability to hear in the normal audio range with or without the use of a corrective device. Position requires standing, walking, lifting, and physical activity during recreation programs and events.

The City of Lomita is located at the base of the Palos Verdes Peninsula approximately five miles inland from the Pacific Ocean in the County of Los Angeles. Lomita is adjacent to the cities of Torrance on the West and North, Rolling Hills Estates on the South, and the City of Los Angeles to the East. Incumbents are exposed to outside weather conditions that are generally mild; however exposure to inclement weather conditions may occur occasionally. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, the incumbent may be exposed to high noise levels at sporting events and other special events.
