POSITION: Staff Dentist

PAY RANGE: Contract Hourly/Non-exempt X Salaried/Exempt

ORGANIZATION LOCATION: BBAHC Dental Department

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

The Staff Dentist position is responsible for providing professional work in the prevention, diagnoses and treatment of disease, injuries and deformities of the oral cavity and surrounding structures of the head and neck.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Graduation from an accredited dental school with a DDS or DMD degree.
  2. Current license to practice dentistry in any U.S. state or territory. Obtaining an Alaskan dental license within one year of employment is required.
  3. Knowledge of public health principles and practices preferred.
  4. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills required.
  5. Current CPR (BLS) certification.
  6. Completion of an accredited general practice residency program is preferred but not mandatory.
  7. Requires a comprehensive knowledge of primary dental care in outpatient settings and knowledge of the principles and practice of modern dentistry as related to public health organizations.
  8. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span (e.g. pediatric/adult/geriatric) and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the assigned unit's policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assumes quality of care for all patients at all times. Adheres to the highest standard of dental practices, ethics and professionalism
  2. Examines individuals requesting care, diagnoses their dental/oral conditions, prescribes and carries out or directs others to carry out appropriate dental/oral treatment or refers individuals for specialty consultation or treatment in conformance with BBAHC policies and clinical guidelines.
  3. Records patient-dentist transactions as they occur in the patient’s dental record so that the dental record accurately and completely reflects the nature of the contact, the condition of the patient and the care or treatment provided. In addition, the staff dentist shall complete referrals and other records, or paper works as shall be required from time to time by the corporation.
  4. Educates individuals in the nature of oral health related conditions and in the general promotion of oral health.
  5. Serves on corporate committees as assigned.
  6. Participates in short and long-term program planning for the dental department and the corporation, including development of goals and objectives.
  7. Travels to fulfill the corporation’s needs and attends meetings as necessary to represent the corporation and/or the Dental Department.
  8. Responsible for full compliance with all applicable federal, state, local and corporate rules, regulations, protocols and procedures governing the practice of dentistry and the clinical provisions of dental care as well as those relating to, but not limited to personal issues, work place safety, public health and confidentiality.
  9. As directed by the Chief Dental Officer, performs other related and/or necessary tasks to achieve organizational and programmatic goals and objectives.
  10. Assists in the implementation of the Dental Departmental plan through coordination with village health care professionals, through direct patient contact, and interaction with civic/educational/ tribal groups.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed primarily in a clinical setting. Work in the clinic or villages involves regular and recurring exposure to potential hazards of radiation and communicable diseases. The Staff Dentist must be able to see, hear, speak, walk, sit, bend, kneel, and lift/carry up to 20 pounds without accommodation. They will be required to travel to villages for 40-45 days per year. This is a Full-Time position Attendance in accordance with the BBAHC Attendance policy is a job requirement.

While on travel, the Staff Dentist may be subject to harsh environmental conditions including but not limited to: travel by small, unpressurized aircraft, boat or snowmachine, lack of running water, poor heat, field equipment break down, and extreme weather conditions. Village travel is required for 40-45 days per year.

RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS: The Staff Dentist is expected to work cooperatively with other Dental Service staff, BBAHC personnel (professional and support), and with all specialists. Dental services are provided for patients of the Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation, in Dillingham and surrounding villages. They will maintain good relations with tribal groups, as well as other official and non-official health, educational, and governing organizations.

POSITIONS SUPERVISED: The Staff Dentist position provides routine direct and indirect supervision to our Dental Assistant Supervisor, Dental Assistants, and to our Dental Hygienist. This supervision is generally instructive, technical, and supportive in nature, as policy decisions are made by the Chief Dental Officer.
