Job Summary

The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for overseeing nursing services, the nursing department, and medical support staff. This position ensures that all nursing care is provided in accordance with physician orders, facility policies, applicable DHCS requirements, Joint Commission standards, and state health regulations

Essential Functions

  • Oversee all nursing services and daily medical operations within the facilities.
  • Ensure patient care is delivered in accordance with physician orders, care plans, facility policies, and nursing standards.
  • Provide direct nursing care to patients when needed. Monitor patient withdrawal symptoms, vital signs, medication response, and changes in condition.
  • Communicate patient care concerns and updates to the Medical Director and other physicians as appropriate.
  • Oversee medication management, including ordering, administration, storage, counts, documentation, and compliance.
  • Review and audit Medication Administration Records (MARs), treatment records, and nursing documentation for accuracy and completeness.
  • Ensure all nursing documentation meets facility standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), The Joint Commission, OSHA, HIPAA, and applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Conduct routine audits of each facility to identify deficiencies and compliance risks. Develop and implement corrective action plans for identified issues.
  • Prepare monthly reports regarding nursing operations, compliance findings, staffing concerns, and corrective actions.
  • Assist with recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, training, and evaluating nursing staff.
  • Coach staff on clinical expectations, documentation standards, and patient care practices.
  • Address performance concerns and participate in disciplinary action processes when necessary.
  • Maintain staffing schedules and assist with coverage planning to support safe patient care.
  • Respond to medical incidents, emergencies, and urgent patient needs.

  • Strong knowledge of healthcare regulations, licensing standards, infection control, HIPAA, OSHA, The Joint Commission, and California Department of Health Care Services requirements.
  • Ability to remain calm and lead effectively during emergencies, incidents, or staffing challenges.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite or related software.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • This position is responsible for supervising licensed nurses, medical technicians, and other assigned medical staff.

Work Environment

  • Primarily indoor environment with occasional outdoor work performed in a residential or outpatient treatment setting.
  • May be exposed to individuals experiencing emotional distress or behavioral challenges.
  • May work in close proximity to staff and clients.
  • Noise level is typically moderate.

Physical Demands

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching throughout the day.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and move objects up to 25 pounds regularly, and occasionally up to 40 pounds.
  • Must have adequate visual acuity to read labels, and written instructions, and sufficient hearing to communicate effectively in a treatment environment.

Travel Required

Moderate travel between facilities external trainings or meeting; must be able to drive or otherwise travel between locations during regular work hours.

Required education and experience

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing, healthcare administration or other related field.
  • Current and active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of California, in good standing.
  • Certified in CPR/First Aid (within 30 days of hire)

Preferred education and experience

  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of nursing experience in a healthcare, behavioral health, residential treatment, detox, or similar setting.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory or management experience leading nursing or medical staff.

Work authorization/security clearance requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
  • Must successfully pass fingerprinting, criminal background check, and any additional clearances required by DHCS, DSS, or funding/regulatory agencies.
