About This Position
Position Summary:
The Bilingual Adult Education Instructor plays a vital role in helping Philadelphia’s adult learners gain the English language, academic, and workplace skills needed for employment, career advancement, and further education. This position delivers high-quality instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL), GED/HiSET preparation, and workplace English, while providing individualized support and guidance. The role blends classroom teaching, curriculum development, student advising, and community engagement to promote learner success. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is strongly preferred to meet the needs of our community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Instruction and Student Engagement
• Deliver engaging ESL and/or GED/HiSET classes using adult-centered, culturally responsive teaching methods.
• Create lesson plans for multi-level learners reflecting the diversity of Philadelphia’s communities.
• Use a variety of instructional formats, including group discussions, hands-on activities, demonstrations, and technology integration.
• Administer pre- and post-assessments to measure progress, adapting instruction to meet individual needs.
• Foster a respectful, inclusive, and well-managed classroom environment.
• Provide one-on-one academic support, tutoring, and career readiness guidance as needed.
Curriculum and Program Development
• Design and adapt curriculum aligned with program standards and learner goals.
• Develop GED/HiSET content in math, science, social studies, reading, and writing, customized for adult learners.
• Incorporate workplace readiness skills, digital literacy, and real-life application into lessons.
Student Recruitment and Support
• Assist with student enrollment, placement testing, and orientation.
• Work collaboratively with staff to recruit and retain adult learners.
• Guide students through goal setting, education planning, and career pathway development.
Administration and Documentation
• Maintain accurate attendance, assessment data, and student progress reports.
• Enter student records in compliance with funding and reporting requirements.
• Submit timely documentation and contribute to program evaluation efforts.
Team Collaboration and Community Engagement
• Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development.
• Collaborate with colleagues, workforce partners, and local agencies to strengthen services.
• Represent Tec Centro at community events and outreach activities.
Requirements:• Bachelor’s degree in education, human services, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum one year of teaching, training, or workforce education experience.
• Strong classroom management, instructional planning, and communication skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and basic classroom technology.
Preferred:
• Bilingual in Spanish and English.
• Experience working with adult learners or in adult basic education programs.
• Familiarity with GED/HiSET testing requirements and ESL curriculum standards.
• Knowledge of community-based resources and support systems.
Working Conditions:
• Classroom-based; all instruction is delivered in person at Tec Centro Philadelphia
(no remote or HyFlex).
• May require occasional evening.
• Occasional lifting (up to 25 lbs.), standing, and use of instructional technology.
• Moderate noise levels are typical of a busy learning environment.
