Title: Powertrain Test Engineer
Reports To: Test Engineering Manager
Department: Powertrain Testing
FLSA Status: Exempt (Learned Professional)
Location: Iowa / Michigan (Detroit Test Center)
Position Summary
The Powertrain Test Engineer is responsible for supporting the setup, execution, and reporting of engine, drivetrain, and vehicle testing. This role operates both independently and within cross-functional teams to deliver accurate, timely, and high-quality test results for internal and external customers.
The position includes responsibility for test cell operation, test setup, troubleshooting, data collection and analysis, and adherence to company procedures and safety standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain engine, drivetrain, and vehicle test systems, including associated instrumentation and data acquisition equipment
- Set up production and prototype engines, vehicles, and test fixtures
- Execute test procedures in accordance with defined standards and customer requirements
- Develop and modify test procedures as needed to support project objectives
- Analyze test data and prepare reports for internal and customer use
- Perform basic project coordination activities, including tracking timelines and communicating status updates
- Communicate effectively with internal team members and customer representatives
- Identify and escalate project risks, including scope, timing, and technical issues
- Diagnose and troubleshoot engines, drivetrains, electrical systems, and test equipment
- Support development and execution of automated testing using test cell software
- Maintain organization of tools, equipment, and test documentation
- Perform routine maintenance checks and housekeeping of test areas
- Support facility and equipment-related issues affecting testing operations
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives (e.g., 5S, safety, process improvements)
- Follow all company SOPs, ISO procedures, and safety requirements
- Attend required meetings and training sessions
- Provide guidance and informal support to Test Cell Technicians and peers when applicable
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position does not have direct supervisory responsibility. The role is expected to demonstrate leadership through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and support of team members.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- 0–3 years of experience in powertrain testing, dynamometer operation, or a comparable engineering environment (entry-level candidates will be considered)
- Valid driver's license required
Preferred Qualifications
- Internship or co-op experience in engine, powertrain, or vehicle testing
- Exposure to data acquisition systems (e.g., ETAS, Vector, A&D, AVL, Cyflex)
- Familiarity with CAN, LIN, or other vehicle communication protocols
- Prior experience in an ISO-certified testing environment

Technical Skills and Knowledge
• Understanding of internal combustion engines and related powertrain systems
• Ability to learn and operate dynamometer test cell systems
• Familiarity with, or ability to learn, diagnostic and measurement equipment:
? Oscilloscopes, multimeters, and current probes
? Signal generators, frequency counters, and spectrum analyzers
• Understanding of mechanical measurement devices (temperature, pressure, flow, etc.)
• Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation
• Working knowledge of electrical systems including sensors, actuators, and controls
• Familiarity with wiring, soldering, and basic fabrication techniques
• Proficiency with hand tools and shop equipment (drill press, band saw, sander, etc.)
• Basic welding and fabrication knowledge (preferred, not required)
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and test-related software systems
Safety-Sensitive Designation
This position is designated as safety-sensitive due to the operation of engine and vehicle test systems and exposure to high-energy mechanical and electrical systems. The position is subject to Excel Engineering's Drug and Alcohol Policy, including pre-employment and post-incident testing where permitted by applicable state law.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to perform heavy work, including:
• Lifting up to 100 lbs occasionally
• Lifting up to 50 lbs frequently
• Lifting up to 20 lbs constantly
Physical activities include standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motion. Visual acuity is required for data analysis, inspection, and operation of measurement devices.
Work Environment
Work is performed in a laboratory and shop environment with exposure to mechanical equipment, noise, heat, fumes, and moving components. Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times.
Travel Requirements
• Less than 10% travel required
• Additional travel may occur based on project needs
