We are seeking an Assistant Chief Engineer to join our hard working and fast-paced team out of your Portland Bakery. The Assistant Chief Engineer will manage along with and in absence of Chief Engineer within the bakery operation. Performs maintenance tasks as needed in an orderly and cost conscious manner. Works safely and efficiently with a minimum amount of disruption to the production process.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs management and leadership duties as designated by Chief Engineer.
  • Manages PM scheduling and assignments.
  • Assists in parts organization and ordering process.
  • Recommends needed improvement in equipment functions to Chief Engineer.
  • Works in compliance with all regulatory and company requirements.
  • Ensure all work areas are clean, safe, and following company GMP's.
  • Ensures that engineering staff work in a safe and efficient manner in compliance with federal and state requirements; including but not limited to utilizing proper LOTO process and following all plant safety rules and procedures..
  • Maintains accurate and timely records of work performed on work orders, maintenance calls, and preventative maintenance reports.
  • Performs all duties safely and to use discretion to prevent injuries.
  • Responds to maintenance and line stoppage calls.
  • Performs duties in all areas within maintenance department.
  • Provides technical assistance and information to chief engineer as needed.
  • Display initiative in recognizing work to be accomplished and make recommendations to chief engineer.
  • Effective communication skills with all staff and vendors.
  • Complete annual safety refresher training requirements.
  • Must be able to work any day, including holidays. or any shift.
  • Must have reliable attendance to meet employer's attendance standards for 24/7 production facility.
  • Must join union within 30 days of hire.
  • Support and adherence to Franz Core Values.
  • Additional duties and/or responsibilities as assigned.
Preferred Education/ Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • LME license preferred (education reimbursement available for employees seeking LME license).
  • PLC experience preferred (connecting, programming, & troubleshooting).
  • Work experience in other similar equipment maintenance of industrial, manufacturing or production-line equipment may substitute.
  • Previous experience in similar production line equipment and facilities at a large commercial or artisan bakery is a plus.
  • Experience working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

Critical Skills and Expertise

  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Knowledge of tooling design and fabrication.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple project plans, with solid project and time-management skills.
  • Attention to detail to effectively manage multiple projects and departmental responsibilities.
  • Excellent organization skills.
  • Effective communication skills with all staff and vendors.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication.
  • Experience working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Ability to effectively lead teams of employees to achieve goal completion.
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Intermediate computer skills using Microsoft Office and CMMS.
  • Must be proficient with a computer, able to become an expert in Franz PM and downtime software and possess the critical thinking skills to assemble and interpret data.
  • Ability to work in a high temperature environment supporting fast paced machinery.
  • Ability to quickly learn new job tasks and flexibility to work in different projects as needed.
